June 10, 2021 Cedrick Jardin

Perhaps best known these days as the setting for the book and movie “Under the Tuscan Sun,” gorgeous hillside Cortona has a long history dating back even before its time as an important Etruscan center. Top attractions include the Duomo (Cathedral), the small Museo Diocesano across the piazza with its superb art collection, and the fascinating Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca with its assembly of Etruscan and Roman era items. Cortona is also bursting with splendid churches spanning many periods.

Included is menu planning, shopping for ingredients, preparation, cooking and of course critiquing and consuming the dishes you create. The class is taught in English either at our home on Mt. The class is about 8 hours long. Please see our website for more information.

Learned so much! 3 of us, met with Shirley in the morning, planned the menu over cappuchinos, then set off shopping at the area markets to get everything we were going to make! From the hand picked produce, butcher for filet's and some great prosciutto, and cured meats, to the local mercado for bread & cheeses! (the sheep's ricotta is to die for), then off to Shirley's gorgeous house up above the hill to learn what to do with it all! She was very kind, patient and learned SO much! Her husband, Chuck was very personable as well! We made SO much food-and took a lot back to our apt. in Cortona! Would definitely recommend-no, HIGHLY recommend!!

Azienda Agricola Baldetti Alfonso

The name BALDETTI is strongly linked to Tuscany and in particular to the territory of Cortona and the love for the land, handed down from generation to generation, has always been a firm point for the family. 2012 marked a fundamental year for the family, in fact the works for the creation of the new winery were completed, also in Localita Pietraia, strongly desired by Alfonso Baldetti and his two sons Daniele and Gian Luca, who in the meantime joined the 'Company thus creating the conditions for a rosy future full of satisfactions. The wines that are produced all have the same importance given the commitment and love that are put into each single grape, however it is normal that if we talk about Cortona, Syrah immediately comes to mind and it is precisely Cortona Doc Syrah Crano The company's flagship wine.

Hermitage of Le Celle, founded in the 13th century by Saint Francis and extended by his successor, Brother Elias, is a humble and simple monastery, built in a true spirit of the Franciscan order. The name “Celle” came from the small hermit houses built in the wholes of the mountain. It is a beautiful, calm and peaceful place, historical monument and a pleasant sight.

My family of 8 took a cooking class with Ryan in August and we had the absolute best time!! Ryan explained everything to us and then he and his wife, Deborah, helped us every step of the way as we prepared a delicious four course Tuscan meal. We couldn't believe how many things we learned to make - it was such a fun and relaxing night and Ryan and Deborah made it really special with their warmth and hospitality. We were lucky to have them come to our villa another night to prepare a wonderful dinner for us, and Deborah also took us on three local wine tours, as well as to visit the sights in Cortona, San Galgano and San Gimignano. We loved spending time with her and Ryan during our week in Cortona and we hope to return one day to see them again!

MAEC - Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca

The MAEC houses an extraordinary collection bringing together all the material discovered in and around Cortona since the 1700s.The museum collection can be visited in two sections: one dedicated to the Etruscan Academy, and the other centered on the most recent findings from the Cortona necropolis. The collection of the Accademai Etrusca boasts exceptional pieces from various historical periods, like the celebrated Etruscan Chandelier, ancient Egyptian burial goods and works by futurist master Gino Severini. The section dedicated to the City of Cortona offers a journey that begins in the paleoenvironment of the Chiana Valley and arrives in the Cortona of Roman times, passing through the ancient period (580-480 B.C.E.) with the princely Etruscan tombs of the Sodo and Camucia and significant findings such as the Tabula Cortonensis, the third longest Etruscan text in the world. The layout of the museum was specifically designed to communicate with visitors in an innovative way, using both reconstructions and multimedia equipment. All texts are fully rendered in both English and Braill.

Very impressed with this museum and saw some superb artefacts, both etruscan and roman. There are four floors featuring a grand array of exhibits and apart from everything else we rather enjoyed the Roman items from the nearby excavations. In our opinion very worth a visit.
