The Pearce Museum at Navarro College

The Pearce Museum at Navarro College is located on the Corsicana, Texas campus of Navarro College in the Cook Education Center. Three unique and nationally significant collections (Civil War and Texas History, Modern Western Art and Prehistoric Central Texas) are interpreted in interactive, visitor-friendly galleries. The American Civil War gallery interprets our Nation's bloodiest conflict through first-person accounts from both sides of the War drawn from our collection over over 16,000 letters and diaries. The Western Art Gallery hosts revolving displays of original artwork celebrating the American West. The "Hunter-Gatherers of the Blackland Prairie" Gallery tells the story of the earliest inhabitants of Central Texas and houses 44,000 prehistoric artifacts. The Pearce Museum also houses Civil War and Navarro College Research Archives, open by appointment.

It is on the Navarro College campus. It cost $6 for seniors. A very informative older fellow named Bob met us at the counter and offered to show us around. The museum is divided into three sections; American Indian, Civil War and western art. This is the collection of Charles Pearce. He collected mainly Civil War letters (had amassed 17,000 of them) and some artifacts. We watched a 15 minute film then toured the exhibits with Bob. They had a sampling of reproductions of letters and numerous artifacts. Bob spent a lot of time explaining it all and telling stories behind many of the items. The collection includes one of only three handwritten copies of the Battle Hymn of the Republic by Julia Ward Howe. The western art collection was very impressive. They had an original Frank McCarthy. There was also an invitational art show with local art. Some of it was very good.

We were driving to the lake house and decided to follow the signs to the winery and what a pleasant and unexpected surprise in Navarro County. The winery was cute and the little tasting/store area was lovely and out in the middle of the country. We did the tastings and they had some lovely Texas wines and a fabulous white sangria that day! They also have some appetizer type plates, we ordered the cheese one and it was good. Pleasant encounter in an unexpected location!

Great place to see exactly how the pioneers lived. It's very well maintained, and staffed with an excellent docent. The Lefty Frizzell Museum was a hit for my husband who listened to this 1950's country musician who influenced many singers who followed him in history after his early death.
