The actual palace and it's grounds are beautiful and take you back to the British era. However the so called museum inside the palace is an absolute joke. There is hardly any information on the royal family, no clue on their life style and hardly any artefacts from the family.
There is ONE restroom for both men and women and the lesser said about it the better. Very poor, absolute shame.

The Madan Mohan Temple was constructed under the reign of Maharaja Nripendra Narayan around 1885 to 1889. The main deity of this temple is Lord Krishna who is popularly called Madan Mohan. The temple also houses other deities like Goddess Kali and Goddess Tara. There is a separate temple of Goddess Bhavani in the Madan Hohan Temple complex. A very big festival called the Rash Yatra is celebrated with a lot of fan fare and extravaganza in the month of November on the occasion of Rash Purnima. The festivities around this period lasts for about a month and there is a lot of visitors from home and abroad are seen during this festival. I traveled with my mother for this year's Rash Yatra. Visit Madan Mohan Bari during this time of the year.

The Shiva Temple of Baneswar was built by Maharaja Nripendra Narayan. One has to go down about 10 feet below the from the temple base to worship. The temple is sparkling clean and well maintained. There is a pond in the temple complex where there are hundreds of tortoise can be seen. The temple is around 10 kms from Cooch Behar town.

If you can brave horrible roads and non-existent infrastructure to travel to a comparatively desolate place where a small temple stands in a modest compound, bereft of much adorenments but somehow having a deep sense of peace and solace, then this place is one fro you. After reaching Baneshwar from Cooch Behar or Alipurduar, you just have to continue on the same road, and after crossing the level crossing, your path would eventually take you here. Every time I go to Cooch Behar, I just have to go to this place. I am not particularly religious, but I like this place deeply. Have you been there yet?

I had the chance of getting some knowledge about the history of the great "Pal" dynasty of Bengal after visiting this place. Archeological department of India has recently (10 to 12 years back) discovered an entire village where they found existence of ponds, houses, wells from the age of "PAL" dynasty.

Actually located in Dinhata, which is about 7 Kms away from Cooch Behar , this temple is more than 200 years old. However, the temple has not got the importance it deserves, probably because for tourists,North Bengal ends with Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri.
