Free fun things to do in Columbus, NE. With a name like Andrew Jackson Higgins, you knew he was destined for great things. Yes, the inventor of the Higgins boat landing craft was born here. They have an entire park and monument dedicated to him. Center piece to the park is a steel replica of his famously designed oak and mahogany 40 ft. boat that literally lead the invasion of every beach (52) American forces landed on over the years. Surrounding the boat are the 52 gold star markers filled with sand from each of the beaches the craft landed on. Interpretive markers explain the Higgins family and the development of this able craft. In the center is also a tribute to the 911 terrorist attack built with actual steel debris from the fallen World Trade Center. It also honors all branches of the armed forces. It is located near water parks and picnic areas and kids can pose for pictures in the landing craft. Great area for a picnic and free admission. Careful with the entrance. You can ONLY enter from South-bound road and tons of no U-turn signs in the area make it hard to go back if you miss the exit...like we did.

This place is great for boating & camping. The lake is muddy, but setup well for skiing/tubing. It's a circular lake with boating traffic counterclockwise. Camping has power hookups free of charge. Get there early Friday or they will be full.
