Overlooking Omaha Beach, the launching point of the U.S. invasion of Normandy, this cemetery contains the graves of 9,386 American soldiers who died at Normandy and a touching memorial to another 1,557 whose bodies were never recovered.
Magnificent cemetery, memorial and visitor centre in the shadows of Omaha beach, poignant and sensitive, superbly laid out and maintained, paying homage to nearly 10,000 American soldiers and their exploits during WW2. I’d visited previously a few years ago on 6th June and the place was packed then - just as busy in mid-August with the extensive parking lots more than full. My most vivid memory (and there is a lot to take in) is the glass-cased artwork consisting of a rifle embedded upright in the sand with a tin helmet atop (nearing the exit to the visitor centre).

What makes this museum great is that they have an amazing collection of vehicles and all sorts of items and they have created interesting scenes. My children could better understand/interpret what they were seeing.

What an incredible experience this visitors center is...just absolutely beautiful and educational.....well thought out, landscaped and presented to the memory of so many who lost their lives...we were there on a gorgeous July afternoon and the grasses were blowing in the breeze and if you I not know what had transpired years ago one would think were just walking up to any helpful visitors center but one beyond the building you get a glimpse of the ocean....so powerful to see such calm and how such violence and bloodshed had occurred and lives lost.years ago on those beaches...very sobering to see in person what one has read about or seen on the news.

The Memorial to the 1st Infantry is on a bluff overlooking Omaha Beach and pays tribute to the brave men who made the ultimate sacrifice. A visit to Omaha Beach was a must for me, and this memorial is a poignant part of that visit.
