Going to Nugget Point Lighthouse added an extra 70 kms to our trip but this was definitely worth it. The winding road leading there was nice to drive, with the foggy ambience building up along the way. And after a 15 minutes walk, arriving at the lighthouse revealed a beautiful scene, quite picturesque. The rugged coast, the mini-archipelago ("the nuggets"), the immense and wild Pacific Ocean and the crushing waves below all make for a great moment. Conclusion: a truly beautiful spot of the Catlins Coast.

Handmade chocolates and cakes by order 5 days per week. SHOP OPEN EVERY FRIDAY 10.30am -3.30pm.
We passed through en route between Dunedin and Queenstown, and popped in to see what was on offer. As Europeans, Belgian chocolate is not too exotic for us, but always yummy. So we bought 2 hazelnut chocolate brownies for next day’s dessert ( passing up a lovely array of fruit/creme patisserie fruit tartlets that looked divine!). When we ate them next evening, lightly warmed in the oven, they proved to be utterly delicious - light but with that satisfying chocolatey gooiness you want n a brownie. Yum, yum, yum. Make sure you pop in to this lovely little shop - the owner/baker is a delight and so is her baking/confectionery - she does beautiful take-away picnic baskets if you’re cycling the Central Otago Trail. Really - total gem, try it!!

Fantastic walk from Cannibal Bay to Surat Bay. We were lucky and saw many and very large sea lions. Keep your distance!

Situated only 5kms from Owaka Township is the home of The Catlins Soap Company which has a giftshop with everything from sauces/oils etc to giftware, kitchenware, jewellery and of course soap. The shop sits within our 5 acre park like garden where you can wander around the garden or sit at the picnic tables and enjoy your favourite coffee. There is a miniature horse, Lee, to say hi to and a swing / trampoline for the kids. When you visit The Catlins Soap Company, you are not a customer, you are our guest and we hope you enjoy visiting The Catlins Soap Company soon.

Easy to locate - toilet nearby entrance to walk - cafe (if you are lucky to arrive when its open - it was closed when we went) - a short walk through the bush to then walk out onto a most beautiful beach, lovely golden sand - you can walk for as long as you want to - we were lucky enough to have seen a huge seal which was just waking from a snooze and watched him go from the sand bank into the water which was pretty cool, having said that I was from then onwards on the look out for more which may be on the sand/beach (having been chased once by one a long time ago, its amazing how quick they can move!!). we never saw any more but did continue to watch the original seal in the shallow waters swimming around.... the beach walk was so lovely, quiet and so beautiful, we shall certainly return in the future.....

Decided to walk through here...it was a little creepy but also rather cool. Had my wee dog with me for company. Not a long walk through and there was graffiti on inside of tunnel. Definitely recommend a torch
