What to do and see in Chonburi Province, Thailand: The Best Things to do

May 18, 2021 Alida England

Chonburi (Thai: ชลบุรี, RTGS: Chon Buri,  [tɕ͡ʰōn bū.rīː] ( listen)) is an eastern province (changwat) of Thailand. Neighboring provinces are (from north clockwise) Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi, and Rayong. To the west is the Gulf of Thailand. Chonburi is home to Thailand's largest tourist oriented city, Pattaya (also spelled Phatthaya), it is the only province outside the Bangkok Metropolitan Area to connect by an eight-lane motorway to Bangkok, 80 km distant. It is home to Thailand's largest and primary seaport, it has a thriving migrant and expatriate population. Due to these factors, the province's population is growing rapidly, with currently some 1.7 million residents (albeit with a large floating or unregistered population). The registered population as of 31 December 2012 was 1.36 million.

Wat Yansangwararam

Reviewed By hooman1020 - Tehran, Iran

Wat Yansangwararam (Locally known as Wat Yan) is a one of the most impressive temples in Pattaya. The temple is located approximately 20 km south of the Pattaya. The temple was built in 1976. Wat Yansangwararam is surrounded by clean gardens, massive lakes & several different architectural styles of buildings, that make the complex a nice & peaceful place. The contemporary design is the most remarkable characteristic of Wat Yan. Many unique architectural influences from India, China, Japan & Lanna can be seen here. Inside the main complex you can find a replica footprint of the Buddha & a large stupa that contains a many relics from the Buddha. The complex is usually quiet, so It's an interesting place for practicing meditation. Public transport is not available for going to Wat Yan, so you have to go there by a group tour or with a private taxi or a rental car. It's a good idea to rent a car and go to the Wat Yan by rental car, So you can discover many attractions of this part of the city such as Nong Noch tropical garden, Silverlake vineyard, Swiss sheep farm, Ramayana Water Park and Buddha mountain. It's located only about 10 minutes away from Buddha Mountain. Standing in a certain spot in the Wat Yan, you can see the Buddha Mountain in the distance. It's really worth a visit for discovering the quieter side of Pattaya. The complex operates (8-17).

Sai Kaew Beach

Reviewed By Maplelagjames - Callaway, United States

We found ourselves locked down for six months in Thailand staying in Jomtien and maybe not in love with the beach and water in Jomtien, friends suggested we give the Navy Beach or Sai Kaew a try. With a rented car, it was no problem at all and while a few hoops to go thru, it was fun and interesting and to see such nice well kept grounds. And the beach itself and the water were more than wonderful. It was so good we made the trip perhaps 30 plus times. The small restaurants had great food choices and more than fair prices. The whole fish at 400 baht was so good, I looked forward to that every time we went. I do not understand some of the negative whining comments some of made of this beach. They must feel very entitled. I can see it might be a chore if taking public transport, but it would not be the end of the world. I felt it was all of great value and that is why we kept repeating the experience so many times. When Covid is brought to heel, and tourism returns in a normal manner I cannot wait to return to Sai Kaew. At all times, we were treated with great respect by all the various Thai personnel involved in the various stations you must go thru from fee paying to chair rental. The beach and water were so nice, it gave great comfort to be able to enjoy this. Thanks so much to all involved. Jim at Maplelag in a very cold day here at minus 18 F below zero.

Sea Turtle Conservation Center, Sattahip

Reviewed By moiracabernet - Pattaya, Thailand

An educational experience for all ages and a pleasant drive towards the Sea Turtle Conservation Centre. Study the Google Map before in case you lose signal, go in the morning or early afternoon and allow yourself enough time to find your way out; roads get trickier to identify when it gets dark (imagine driving through country roads with no street lights), signage towards the site is lacking, ask a Thai Navy officer "dow" (meaning turtle) or ask your kid to quickly draw one out, they will happily point you the right way. Entrance is free, fair to support by spending some money in the souvenir shop for good cause, cute turtle-themed items unlike the usual Thai souvenirs seen anywhere else. Set up in 1954, when awareness on turtle conservation was low to zero anywhere else in the world, the initiative by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, supported by the Thailand Navy was highly admirable. Skip the tiger/elephant zoos (where "staff" treatment is questionable), bring your kids and family here instead.

Koh Larn

Reviewed By ShantiD64

If you are going to Koh Larn (Coral Island), please consider going in a ferry, which takes 30THB only. Do not get lured by the vendors who offer speed boats, single boats etc at high prices, saying Ferry will not go to the island and drop you somewhere else. The Ferry will drop you exactly at Coral Island only. It starts from 6am from near Pattaya Beach. You will see a sign board written Pattaya City from the beach, Ferry starts from there and you can easily take a tuk tuk till there. The last Ferry from Coral Island to Pattaya beach is at 5.30 pm Lot of activities are there to do if you love water sports- para sailing, snorkling, scuba diving, banana boat ride etc, or if you just want to grab a beer or drinks and chill at sea side, take sun bath, this is an excellent place for same. If you are lucky, you can get to see sea animals being cooked in open as well :) . You can keep your luggage at the locker available at 100 THB at beach. Its near the last restaurant in the lane. But be prepared to meet to unfriendly and rude thai people who are only bothered to grab your money and not guide you properly. Thai people are very rude and unfriendly, and do not even know how to behave with tourists. You will find language barrier as thais can not speak english, so be prepared with google translator in your phone to translate from english to thai.

Underwater World Pattaya

Reviewed By jomtienbeach - Jomtien Beach, Thailand

I am an American teacher and professor who has learned as a child as well as from children what helps them learn. Children want to learn what their parents and families like and make an effort to know. Elephants and flowers are the heritage of Thai children. Nevertheless, they should be shown the interest and fascination of marine life. California (USA) has the international venues of these interests and sciences. From San Diego to Eureka, the California Coast features many aquatic and marine habitats. Harbor seals, whale migration routes, Great White Sharks, maritime exhibits, Bodega Bay abalone sanctuaries are a small part of the state-wide activities of ocean life on display. But Pattaya is fortunate to have its Underwater World a short ride south on Sukhumvit Road. Although an adult, I take children to this wonderful learning venue whenever I can introduce them. They are bedazzled and amazed at what is displayed in the very interactive fish and marine exhibits.
