The Ruh Ordo cultural centre in Cholpon-Ata on the shores of Lake Issyl Kul in Kyrgyzstan was built in 2002. It was named after the famous Kyrgyz write Chingiz Aitmatov.
The ideological purpose of this centre was to present 5 major religions side by side symbolizing unity of all faith's. Ruh Ordo means Spiritual Centre and this place brings that spiritual aspect to the forefront. The centre has the five identical white chapels in a circle equi-distant from each other with the symbols of each religion on top. The chapels itself contains relics of each religion and the idea is that there needs to be tolerance and respect for people of other faiths.
The complex has a large hall used to host Concerts and other local cultural events. A beautiful pier with four pavilions symbolizing the four directions or four seasons was also built on the shore. Scattered around the park are sculptures of famous people (see pics) including great scholars like Copernicus, Aristotle, Avicenna and others.

Costing 50 som, the gentleman who collects the fee is lovely. There is a lack of information but at least they have the information board to give you some idea of what it is. Huge place filled with rocks, petroglyphs and burial sites. Guidebook would be great_ guide if you ant to learn more. Lovely view of the lake and Mountains on both sides and although some travellers might be a tad disappointed with the side of the petroglyphs, it still makes a nice stroll.

What an amazing experience. For a small museum, the place is jam-packed with artefacts and memorabilia. Sadly most are in Russian, but we were fortunate to have a military person who happened to visit the museum at the same time, offering to give us explanations which was just great.
They have an excellent model of the Issel-Kul Lake with background which makes the visit really beneficial. The museum is very centrally located and on the Main Road of Cholpon Ata.

A few kilometers past Cholpon Atta is a turn off to Chudo Voda. After just cca 200 metres off the main road you come to rockpools with natural hot water. Entry costs 200 Som. There are changing rooms and towels can be borrowed for 50 Som. It was lovely to relax in the hot water while gazing at the snowy peaks across the lake. Certainly relieves sore muscles and if that is not enough, massage is available.
Suitable for children as the pools are not very deep.

I was guding a tour this last summer and my clients wanted to get out and take a look at this interesting mausoleum. In general it's nothing special and I did not think it was worth a stop but my clients liked it. It's worth a stop to get a good picture of the lake before you come to Cholopon Ata.

The important thing about this site is the ancient petroglyphs at the far end of the abandoned runway. I gather one must drive on the old runway to the far end to reach the entrance to the petroglyph area. A ticket lady who lives in a nearby house keeps a lookout to ensure all visitors pay the small entrance fee.
This area was apparently special to the ancient shamans, and hence some beautiful rock-engravings. A number of balbals (Turkic totem-like stone monuments) have been assembled from the local area and emplaced here.

It's a lovely building with a wonderful view but, with no games in progress, there was not much to see inside. However, when the World Nomad Games begin, this hippodrome can seat 10,000. The big draw during the games is kok-boru (imagine polo played with a decapitated goat carcass).

That this is the Nº.5 attraction in Cholpon Ata says a lot about the town. I suppose it might be interesting for aviation history buffs and it did feel weird driving along a deserted runway. Apart from that the only reason to go here is that you must travel along it to visit the Museum of Petroglyphs at the end of the runway. I didn't even bother to take a photograph.
