The Alishan Mountain Range is one of the five largest mountain ranges in Taiwan. However, “Alishan,” which means “Ali Mountain,” is in fact not a single mountain, but rather refers to the entire mountain range. The area has been home to a rich stock of Taiwan red cypresses and Taiwan yellow cedars since ancient times. From 1912 until the late 1960s this was the site of the largest forestry center in all of Taiwan. The Giant Trees Plank Trail within the recreation area currently has two sections. Walking along the trail, you’ll encounter 36 red cypress giant trees that have survived through the centuries, reminders of the magnificence of these sacred trees.

Even if you are unable to hike long distances or climb many stairs you can enjoy Alishan. Just take the 100nt train to the tops, walk 45 minutes through the forest seeing the old trees and views down the stairs, and take the train back from the Sacred Tree. Recommend going morning up to 11am to beat the fog rolling in.

This reminds me the Redwood Forest and Muir wood in California, smaller scale but easier to walk around. It was an excellent experience to walk in this area and breathed the freshest air while your eyes watched all beautiful nature scenes. This is a must visit spot and must do activity at Alishan.

The Alishan Forest Railway was built during the peak period of global railway technology. Four major engineering methods were used on this one railway. It has been a national landmark of Taiwan’s cultural landscape, serving as a witness to the historic development of Taiwan's forestry sector over the past 100 years. During the rocking, swaying journey up from Chiayi you’ll see the changes of plant species as you pass through three different forest zones: tropical, warm, and temperate. The various track sections also have their own unique characteristics, such as a spiral section (Dulishan Station), and the horseshoe bend (Shuisheliao Station), making this railway journey a truly rare attraction.

Boarded the railway going up to the sunrise deck it is the most magical experience ever. The minute I saw the old railway I instantly felt like Im in Japan, especially the old train. There were few people in our cart so we can move freely which other carts dont have the luxury as they are filled up. I love looking at the window while the train was moving and having to see the fog over all these ancient trees. It gibes off that eery, mystical feeling. And the sound of the train tracks moving makes it more like it came straight out if a horror movie, but less on horror more on mystical. The train ride was very comfortable and I love the red glow it shows underneath when we arrived to our destination (see the picture). All in all it was a very memorable experience.

Nestled within three mountains near the famous Mt. Ali (Chiayi County) is the old Japanese-era village of Fenqihu. We have enjoy exploring the top of Mt. Ali (Alishan), but visiting this village was even more enjoyable. First, it provided top-notch hiking for the family, with mountain views, cedar forests, and cherry blossoms. The Old street provided local delicacies, such as Alishan tea and coffee, and the railway bento boxes, which were invented here.There is also an operational mountain railway line, which add a rustic charm to the area. It takes awhile to get there, but it is well worth it.

Using our travel passes, we took HSR from Taipei to the Chiayi HSR station, the took the dedicated National Palace Museum shuttle bus direct to the Southern Branch. The museum and its grounds are lovely, and the exhibits are well worth the visit; we especially appreciated the innovate displays which nicely complimented the traditional displays. If you enjoyed the main National Palace Museum in Taipei, you will enjoy this museum-and HSR makes visiting a breeze!
