A friend took me up to the hiking trail, and you have to take the trail with a local guide, essentially waiting in line for the next guide to show up and take you. It was a moderate hike, and paused a while for my friend who wasn't as fit, but wasn't anything most people who are used to hiking can't handle. Was surprisingly much cooler than the city, but we were there in December so it was a nice change. Great views at the overlook and plenty of chances to take pictures, if you're willing to wait a little while for people to clear out a little. If you've never been on the trail, would highly recommend it for views you wouldn't usually see from Chiang Mai.

Medium hiking ???? level to Wat Pha Lat temple and then more challenging part to Doi Suthep temple. The trail is mix of short asphalt road, stones and dry mud. Water ????, snack and good shoes ???? are minimum. The trail begins at campus of Chiang-Mai university with Soi Suthep street. One side of the street with restaurants and second with fence of university. First part to Wat Pha Lat is easier walk in tropical ???? jungle not so steep, it starts with short asphalt part at zoo corner and continues up with various terrain. Second part in case you have energy is steeper and more difficult and reaching Doi Suthep temple. You can try as well opposite direction which is bit easier alway on the way down.
