Cheb (Czech pronunciation: [ˈxɛp]; German: Eger) is a town in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic, with about 33,000 inhabitants. It is situated on the river Ohře (also called Eger in German), at the foot of one of the spurs of the Smrčiny and near the border with Germany. Prior to 1945, which saw the expulsion of the German speaking population, the town was the centre of the German-speaking region known as Egerland, and was part of the Northern Austro-Bavarian dialect area.

Hrad Cheb is a well preserved Castle near the centre of Cheb, which is an attractive town in itself. The Ccastle opens at 1000 and you walk past the ticket office into a large courtyard in which are Medieval Trebuchets and some Modern Art,which contrastwith each other surprisingly well. To the left is the `Black Tower` from which there are decent views of Cheb and its surroundings. The Castle is a fair size and there is enough within it to hold the interest of visitors for a good couple of hours anyway.Certainly,we spent longer there than we intended. Well worth a visit!
