What to do and see in Changning, Shanghai Region: The Best Shopping

November 13, 2021 Tynisha Seiler

The largest city in China is also its most cosmopolitan, offering visitors a chance to experience the past, present, and future all at once. The Huangpu River splits Shanghai into two districts: Pudong and Puxi. The Pudong skyline looks like it was ripped from the Jetsons, with the bulbous Oriental Pearl TV and Radio Tower looking a bit like a two headed lollipop. On the Puxi side, you can walk the Bund riverside district to get a taste of old Shanghai.

Tianshan Tea City

Reviewed By Tour664591 - Shanghai, China

What a pleasant find in Shanghai for quality tea with thousands of years of history. I've read many reviews before I came here, nice tea smell once stepped in the tea town, walked around happy no crowded tourists like Shanghai other sites :):), some shops sellers are very passionate to invite you try different teas, take your time and no pressure haha. We finally went in Jane’s shop (first floor Room1068) in the center with an old Shanghai bicycle outside, turned to be a really smart choice, it’s a tea shop not specially for tourist. Jane runs family business, she is 50th generation, and their family have more than 1400 yrs history for planting tea, they have a tea farm and even their own tea museum in yellow mountain---the most beautiful mountain in China. We are planning to go there next spring. Moreover here all products price are transparent, no worry pay more might get low quality thou. it’s a China top brand tea, have online like Taobao shops and many offline shops, all prices are the same in whole China, of course offline is better for us because we can taste, haha choose the proper ones...love their green tea, black tea and jasmine tea!

Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre

As others have written, this place has recently moved. Google Maps had it listed under its old location (in the basement of some apartment complex) but that's not right anymore. The address listed here is correct. No photos allowed in the museum, sadly, but it's well worth a visit. The posters all have translations of the captions into English (some in French, too) and many of them also have a few paragraphs of interpretation and context. My experience is that Chinese people use the word "propaganda" unironically and without any hint of negativity that English-speakers usually do. Looking at these posters, some of which I'd seen in books before, I was amazed at how quotidian some of them are, and how powerful and striking others were as well. I certainly appreciated the view into a part of Chinese history that gets represented through a particular lens in US education. I also appreciated looking at what is openly labeled propaganda, and how that made me think about what we see in the US that is not so openly labeled propaganda (but is obviously and clearly analogous). Take the time to visit this museum. It's got a great little gift shop where I bought far too many postcards, and they have a nice collection of books and even original copies of Mao's little red book in multiple languages. They also have posters of varying sizes for sale.

Shanghai's Hongqiao Pearl Market

I went to the Hongqiao Pearl Market specifically looking for pearls. Before I went, I read the trip advisor reviews. Based upon the reviews, I decided to give Catherine's a visit. Catherine's shop is near the escalator on the second floor. Catherine did not disappoint me. She was knowledgeable and helpful. We sat down and discussed various pearl strands and the costs. She was even polite when we negotiated the price. Would go back and buy from Catherine again.

Dream cloud nine Shopping Mall (changning)

Reviewed By pupkinpie2 - San Francisco, United States

Beautiful modern shopping mall. I think it has 8 floors total. Each floor specializes in something (kids, womens clothes, mens, electronics, restaurants, etc.). You will find a guide next to the elevator. Cloud Nine features brand name clothing stores. Its very clean and the bathrooms are nice. I would highly recommend you find one of the many restaurants to eat for lunch and dinner. They get very busy with lots of people eating in and taking out/delivery. You can find all types of food. Sadly there is not a restaurant directory (at least in English) so you have to look at the menu to each one. Most have translations in English. Recommend: The vending machines throughout the mall, rides and games for all ages, unique restaurants, and massage chairs (pay using Alipay or WeChat). Easy to get to using the 2,4,5 metro lines.
