The Rhino and Lion Reserve is an excellent venue to spend an afternoon or morning viewing some of Africa’s most beautiful animals in an attractive and open environment close to Jo’burg and Pretoria. Reachable in about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria it’s particularly suited if you do not have the time to visit one of the larger reserves further away. Important: Do not confuse with the Lion Park which is much smaller and does not have the same number of animals. Here also the Lions/Cheetahs and African Wild Dogs although not roaming free with the other animals are in much bigger and more humane spaces. This greatly reduces their aggressive behavior towards the vehicles viewing them.

As part of our package, we provide an additional private extended game drive (5 hours+) with our vehicle going a little further into the reserve than the lodge’s vehicle, two drives in total. This is unique and because our driver/guide is very experienced it maximizes your animal viewing.   On the Mmilo private extended drive, we get out and walk at the waterholes and dams at the special viewing points. This enables you to experience the sounds, sights, and smells of the reserve more closely. Our private transfer to the lodge and back is done in our touring SUV On the way to and from the safari, we can add visits to other attractions such as the Elephant Sanctuary, Walk with Lions and Sun City, This is also the best and most cost-effective option for a short safari from Cape Town where there is no option for a safari that is realistic or worthwhile. It gains its name from the huge amounts of fossil remains of early man and our more apelike ancestors discovered here in the dolomite caves just beneath its surface. The geology of the region has made it one of the richest fossil-bearing regions in the world not just of early ape-men but many other extinct creatures. Sterkfontein Caves are where the original discoveries were made and it is here we make first stop. The modern interpretive centre has replicas of the fossils and an in-depth description of their relevance to mankind's family tree as well as fossils of other species. You are taken down into the caves by the resident cave guide. There is some low bending, but for the main part the caves are spacious but a reasonable level of fitness is required.
