What to do and see in Central Area/City Area, Singapore: The Best Gift & Specialty Shops

August 15, 2021 Moriah Teneyck

The Singapore cityscape looks like it was ripped from the pages of a science fiction comic book. If you’re hungry for a true Singapore experience, sample the myriad street foods or take a cultural cooking class. The Botanic Gardens and the Gardens By the Bay offer a slice of horticultural heaven, and the observation deck of the Sands SkyPark makes you feel like you’re high above the clouds. The banks and walkways along the Singapore River bustle with local activity.

We came to Tea Chapter to look for Zisha teapots manufactured in Yixing, China. The shop has a nice range of Zisha and porcelain teapots to brew Chinese tea leaves. Some of the Zisha teapots have certificates of authenticity from the craftsmen while others do not. Prices vary, depending on the skills of the craftsmen. The shop has a good variety of Chinese tea leaves. Small canisters provide customers with the smell of tea leaves. Staff Angie and May Eng explained the different tea leaves to my wife and me. They also helped us with the teapots. Both were patient with our enquiries. Located along Neil Road, the Peranakan styled shophouse is well designed in complementary traditional decor that suits the old-world charm of Chinese tea trading business. Tea leaves and tea ware are neatly displayed for browsing and purchase.

Enjoy Tea

Chinese tea drinking is an amalgamation of tea ware, tea leaves, brewing methods and even drinking techniques. When my wife and I recently visited Enjoy Tea, the owner Michael Teo distilled his years of enjoying Chinese tea and helped us to better understand the art and science of enjoying Chinese tea. Tea products are creatively displayed on open shelves as well as on a long table in the centre. The more expensive teapots are displayed inside glass cupboards. As items caught our eye, Michael would take them for our inspection and explain their origin and use. There is a wide range of available products and prices vary to suit different budgets. At the end of our 1.5 hours' visit, we bought an exceptional oolong tea with price to match. We also purchased 2 lovely Ruyao tea cups with Seigaiha design.

I was quite uncertain about where I should get my first suit tailored for university. I decided to give Mohan's Custom Tailors a shot, and the entire process was absolutely amazing. The first time I went in, Mr Max Mohan explained everything to me, and guided me through the entire process, from choosing the colour of the suit, all the way to the tiniest of intricacies like the subtle engraving of my initials on the shirt. He took extremely good care of me, and ensured that I was completely satisfied with whatever I selected. Recently, I went for my first fitting, and I got to see his sheer expertise in action. He gave me advice as to every aspect of the fitting, and ensured that the measurements taken were accurate to the fraction of a centimetre. Truly, they say that a relationship with a great tailor lasts you a lifetime, and I can see why. After experiencing the service Mr Max Mohan has provided, I cannot see myself going to anyone else ever again. He genuinely cares about his customers and the suits he makes. I don't think you'll be able to find anyone as dedicated to his craft as Mr Max Mohan is. Thank you Mr Mohan for your wonderful services so far. I will most certainly come back to you when I need anything tailored in the future!
