We went to Minnewaska in March of 2020 and we thought we were going to the one in New Paltz, but wound up here. This was not a disappointment because this park of the park has so much more going on. We parked in the lot, paid our $10 to park at the kiosk, toured the interesting visitor's center which tells about the animals and the highlights of the park and then we were off to see Verkeerderkill Falls. There are signs which point you in the direction of Sam's Point and then from there you will walk toward the falls. The route to the falls passes by terrain that is so markedly different and even though it says 1.7 miles from Sam's Point it felt like we were walking forever. Bring water, snacks, and a backpack. The falls are quite impressive, and you will have to take a short little climb to the top, but it was so worth it.

There are many trails here, all with great views. You can hike to two spots to see the falls, one is an easy hike to a viewing platform that allows you to look down on the falls, and another is a more difficult climb down (and then back up!) a long set of stairs to see the falls from below. Worth it! There is also a longer trail to Inspiration point with spectacular views of the mountains and valley below. We hiked mid-week, but the trails got busy very quickly, especially by late morning. Most people tried their best to move to the far side of the trail when passing and to wear masks.

Stopped here during the week. It wasn't too busy, but I imagine it will be very busy on a weekend. There are tubes to rent for a trip thru the falls - which are actually more of a rapids. You can also walk on a path along the river that will take you to Skinner's Falls Beach. There you can walk on rocks into part of the river. The walk is $1, but well worth it. The $1 walking fee is included in the rental cost of a tube.

Sonoma Falls is a beautiful outdoor destination spot in Upstate New York. Enjoy miles of hiking trails, 7 tiers of waterfalls, and fish the stock ponds. We also have a bakery/cafe that serves breakfast and lunch all day. Dine inside or take it outside for a picnic.
