My accommodations in Castlebar recommended this as an activity on a rare sunny autumn day. The views were stunning and the path well-maintained. I walked to the car park entrance (per their directions) and there were a couple of signs about the history of the area (back to prehistory) around that entrance. I never saw any of the markers or features the signs said to look out for, not even the crannog, but it was interesting to know some history before setting out. I ran into heaps of locals on my walk.

Bikes & Boards is a bike rental company based at the start of the Castlebar to Turlough Greenway. This stretch of the Great Western Greenway is an 8km route which takes you to the National Museum of Country Life in Turlough. This section of Greenway is a perfect day out for families or groups looking for a taste of the best of what the Greenway has to offer. We are based in Lough Lannagh holiday village on the shores of Lough Lannagh, Mayo's adventure hub and conveniently located within a 5 minute walk of Castlebar town centre. Castlebar is also connected to the Westport Greenway via Islandeady.
Bikes and boards is fantastic. Rented 2 adult bikes, one with carriage for toddler and 4 yr old and a bike for 9 yr old, all with helmets. Went on a great adventure all mapped out and mostly through a green way. The staff are super helpful and friendly and the kids loved the adventure. Some beautiful scenery on route. A brilliant day or few hours out!

We spent a lovely day on the Castlebar to Turlough Greenway. With lots of parking it’s really convenient to start wjere we hired the bikes (Bikes & Boards) in Lough Lannagh Holiday Village with a Greenway into Castlebar town and then you follow the green arrows through the town and then back onto the greenway at the town park. There’s a great playground at the town park and a wonderful one in the woods at Turlough. Our 5 year old really enjoyed his first big cycle and our 3 year old loved being in her trailer. The museum is well worth a visit but the playground and cafe were the star attractions for us it was the perfect day trip.
