Castelo de Ansiaes

Formerly a bustling medieval town, Ansiães is now an abandoned and ruined walled town, with a castle at its highest point. The church is, unlike the rest of town, pristinely preserved and has a beautiful door. Truly a trip back to medieval times!

Douro Fluvina Yachts

Douro Fluvina is a small company that charter yachts on the Douro river water way in Portugal. The company owns a small Marina with all facilities. Our boats are 28ft Motor Sail Yacht. The Douro water way starts on the Atlantic coast at Porto, and comprises five connected lakes that extend for 200 km to the border with Spain.Along the river there are free public piers with charming little family-run restaurants nearby where you can have superb meals, At some piers there are also small hotels and shops. All prices are very good.As these are inland waters it's perfect for a first charter experience. You can explore the valley with our boats and stop were ever you like, take tours by train along the valley, walk in the vineyards, visit farms and small towns or simply swim in the warm clear waters of the river. The climate is pleasant at any time of year.Give it a go. It's great fun, great value for money and thoroughly enjoyable!

Casa dos Cantoneiros - Foz-Tua Wine House

Reviewed By toniShanghai - Shanghai

This is an old house which was restored by the local government and is now a place where local wine and olive oil producers can sell their produce. There is no mark up and the money goes to the producers. They also have some sweet items like local honey, biscuits and nuts. You can taste the olive oils but unfortunately not the wines. (Thursday to Sunday from 15.00 till 20.00 I think) It's not necessarily that easy to find but if you are heading towards Tua and the station there it is the small while house after the dam on the right hand side, just where the first sign to the Station for Tua is. * Don't go to the station that way, it's a terrible road through the village, go to the second entrance about 1km away which is much better approach and not so scary!
It was a very nice experience and the lady in charge was very helpful. If you are traveling with your own car, then it's certainly worth picking up some olive oil as well as wine! Be aware they can only accept cash though as they keep the money for the producers direct.

As part of a Viking River cruise, an excursion took us to the town of Pinhao and then lunch to a small farm/winery outside of town called Quinta de Avessada. I must say we all agreed the owner looks and acts quite like Mr. Bean, the British comedian. Of course he recognizes that and plays it to the hilt. We arrived and were given sparkling wine and a tour of his winery. Then we retired to the dining room where we were served a sumptuous meal complete with entertainment and brief lectures from "Mr. Bean". A quite enjoyable happening.

Paolo was a most gracious captain and host! We were 2 couples, that only had one day in the valley, and we felt spending it with Paolo gave us a taste of all there is to do in the area. It was too chilly to swim, but we did enjoy a couple hours on the boat. He told us about the wineries, the port industry and the history of the valley. Afterwards we drove to his family's vineyard which had spectacular views of the river and valley. We walked through the vines and he gave us a tour of their production area. Then he prepared a nice lunch for us and we sampled the wines they produced. We felt like we were leaving a good friend at the end of our day. If you're short on time and want something that checks all the boxes, this is a fun way to do it. If you have more time, it would be a great way to familiarize yourself with the area and get an insiders view about where to visit or do tastings. Highly enjoyable day with a very sweet man and his dog!

Vale do Coa Archaeological Park

Previous booking strongly advised! The Côa valley is a unique place in the world, displaying open-air artistic manifestations from different moments of prehistoric, protohistoric and historic times, namely the greatest assembly of Ice Age open-air engravings presently known. This extraordinary rock art collection is distributed along two main axes: the river Côa and the river Douro, of which the Côa is a tributary. More than a thousand schist outcrops with rock art manifestations are known, in more than 70 different sites, with a predominance of Upper Paleolithic art, followed by motifs belonging to the Iron Age, Historic times and Late Prehistory. As a recognition of the cultural and scientific interest of this group of findings, the Parque Arqueológico do Vale do Côa (Côa Valley Archaeological Park) was created in 1996 and the rock art sites inscribed in UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1998.

One of Portugal's famous Porto School architects designed the terrific Museu do Coa which houses not only items collected from this site but displays worldwide prehistoric rock art over 28,000 years. Fabulous exhibit. Air conditioned and wonderfully designed it attracts 1000's of tour bus/visitors who are unable to book a guided tour of the actual Vale do Coa Archaeological Park. Advanced Reservations for the 2 hour, 4-wheel drive, 8-person max guided tours are mandatory!!! Most of the tour guides speak more than 3 languages, however most tours are limited to Portugese or just one other, by fixed time slots. Only 6-8 4WD Vehicles/Guides total limits site capacity. On our tour, English was only available after 3:30 PM so we joined a French 10:00 AM, and a Portugese 10:30 AM tour. You are drivien to the petroglyph sites, then walk a mile or so on dusty, up/down dirt path. Not suitable for people with walking problems. Some children are allowed but are instructed not to keep touching the stone carvings - a huge problem for one of our groups with 3 kids under 15 years old. Not recommended for summer - super hot even this Spring. Bring drinking water.

Quinta do Popa

"Each man has their dream" Luis Pato The dream of the son of Francisco Ferreira (Popa) was held by acquiring a vineyard in Douro, in one of the best locations in the oldest wine region in the world, in which reside all his childhood memories. After its purchase, in 2003, at the time named as "Quinta do Vidiedo", led all his economic effort, dedication and perseverance adding small parcels, mostly old vineyards and others for planting new vineyards and groves, equally blessed by a soil quality and raised in terraces under the splendor of the Douro river. In 2008 this dreamer, with the support of his family and the oenologist Luis Pato, start a new cycle and pays tribute to his deceased father baptizing the vineyard with his nickname "Popa",attributed by his friends due to the liveliness and happiness which he led the life against the difficulties. Today, the Quinta do Popa comprises 14 hectares of vineyard composed of a mixture of noble grape varieties, all with the letter A, among them Tinta Roriz, followed by Touriga Franca, Tinto Cao, Sousao and Malvasia Preta with emphasis in large percentage of Touriga Nacional, apart from three hectares of old vineyards aged over 60 years of age. A project based on a family structure that connects different generations, which is reflected in the actual production process, in which reconcile the most sophisticated techniques with centuries of strict tradition, such as the vinification through foot treading in granite mills with conditions of temperature control, and in building a brand with personality and quality, created by its history and the harmonious marriage between the earth and its atmosphere that terroir has to offer.

Penedono Castle

Reviewed By Amazon122s - Santa Comba Dao, Portugal

The Castle of Penedono is located in the centre of the medieval village of Penedono, it seems that the village was inhabited at least the Pre-Roman times, and they tell that it is one of the most interesting and probably the most unique fortresses in the whole of Portugal. The Castle of Penedonos is also known under the name of “Castelo do Magriço”, and is almost 947 metres above the sea level. The castle has been the home of the noble family Coutinho during the Portuguese dynastic crisis of 1383-1385. You will also find in the surrounding area of the castle antique weapons. Al together it is a very nice location and certainly worth the visit, park the car and everything to see like the castle, the Church and the chapel are all in an a walking distance, you do not need to visit the tourist info at the feet of the castle, because the only thing you get is a leaflet from the castle, nothing more, and the visit of the castle is for free.
