Bowron Lakes Provincial Park

First time backcountry canoe camping in 20 yrs for me, great place to try it again. Some tips will prepare you for this challenging trip. 1) Pack light. You have to carry everything, either in your canoe and on your back. Leave the fresh steaks at home. Eat trail mix or dehydrated whatever for 5 days. You'll live. 2) Warm and Dry. It rained on us daily. Sometimes heavily. Leave heavy cotton clothes at home. Think lightweight Merino wool or technical. Sandals etc for in the boat, light boots and wool socks for camp (even in June). 3) Dry-bag everything. Test your packing by spraying your packs with a garden hose for 5 minutes. If your spare clothes are still dry, you're doing it right. 4) Shake-down. Hold your backpack upside down and shake for 30 seconds. Nothing should come out. Actually practise loading your canoe beforehand. Proper Preparation Prevents Peril. 5) Leave young kids at home. Sorry to those who disagree but I think the majestic beauty of the circuit is lost on young kids who wail when they're cold, damp, hungry or tired. 6) Know your limits. I canoed the small Class I rapids on the circuit without moving water experience, but I read a guidebook, surveyed the terrain, had a good canoe partner I could communicate with, and have 25 years of flatwater experience. If you have any doubts, portage around the rapids. We did see two wrecked boats - this happens if you're foolhardy. 7) Bugs! The mosquitoes are thick and ferocious. I used a Shemagh (middle-eastern head wrap) and it was more effective than bugspray, whose odour can attract bears anyways. Best 5 bucks I spent on gear. 8) Cooking: Bring enough stove and fuel supplies, with spares. Firewood is of poor quality and not reliably stocked. Bring a full size axe, the wood is supplied as bucked rounds 12-18" in diameter - a hatchet won't be of much help.

Gold Rush Trail

The Gold Rush Trail starts in New Westminster and winds its way north to Barkerville. Travelling the Trail, you’ll experience many fascinating “nuggets” of history as you voyage through some of the most spectacular natural beauty in the world, meeting some of the friendliest people along the way. Ever had gold fever? You’re about to embark upon a journey along the Gold Rush Trail that was travelled by gold seekers since the late 1850s who had that “gold fever”, hoping to strike gold. Both men and women journeyed into the great wilderness of British Columbia due mainly to the stories they had heard about “easy gold.” Though only a handful struck it rich finding the precious metal, many of these early pioneers helped to build roads, railways and bridges and establish the great cattle ranches and timber enterprises in British Columbia’s early history. There are countless unique activities to take in too!
