We had a great day touring the Big Island with Rob. He worked with us prior to our visit to customize our time together and maximize our day. We were picked up at our resort in Waikoloa and took the southern route around the island making stops along the way to end up at Volcanoes National Park. After a fabulous day, Rob and Jodi got us safely back to our resort while we relaxed and watched some great videos in the van. We appreciated Rob’s knowledge of the island and the places we visited. His van was very comfortable and we enjoyed snacks and beverages brought along. We will definitely tour with Rob again on our next visit to the Big Island.

Kona is the second stop in Hilo on our cruise. We booked a whole day tour with C Big. We started seeing green turtles at the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park. Our next stop at the famous Royal Kona Coffee Center was very informative. Aside from free sampling of the many types of coffee, a guided tour was available. We learned how the coffee bean was carefully handpicked in this farm. The stages how the coffee bean goes from the tree to your coffee cup was also explained. Since this visit, the knowledge i gained gave me a better appreciation when I take my coffee. After a lunch stop, we visited the painted church. The tour’s last activity was a drop off at the Kahaluu beach for some snorkeling. I had about 45 minutes to see the fish very near the shore before we were picked up and brought back to the ship. We did most of the activities that Kona had to offer in one day.

Shelby, the owner, is an amazing tour guide. We spent 2 days with her and was a highlight of our 2+ week Hawaiian adventure and she did our airport transportation as well. (See my North and South Island reviews.) These were some of the best private tours I have ever gone on. She is very reasonably priced, takes to places you want find on your own, tells the island's history in a really fun way - totally recommend if you want to really get a sense of the Big Island. If you are new to or have never snorkeled before, this is the ideal choice! Particularly good for families with younger children or swimmers who aren’t certain if they are “sea worthy” enough for one of our longer trips. This trip is much slower-paced and affords guests time to become more familiar and comfortable with the exciting and beautiful sport of snorkeling. Our crew will be happy to help you adjust your mask, fins and snorkel and help you become comfortable viewing the tropical fish while using a flotation assistance device we call a “noodle”. You'll even watch for dolphins and whales along the way!

Inclusions: Flotation Aids, Historical narration of Captain Cook's fate at Kealakekua Bay, Sightseeing along coast of sea caves & lava tubes, Snacks, beverages and bottled water

Exclusions: Please bring towel, reef safe sunscreen (zinc based is recommended. lotion, no spray) and cover-up, Gratuities

If you are looking for what feels like a private charter (as opposed to a big four story catamaran with 50 people in it) then Dolphin Discoveries is your outfit. You may balk at such an early start (7:30 check-in) but you're rewarded when you get to your destination with hardly a crowd... well, until that huge cat arrives. The early bird certainly gets the worm. As a family, it is tradition to snorkel at our favorite two spots in all of Hawaii (maybe even the whole world) ...Capt Cook's Cove (Kealakekua Bay) and Place of Refuge (Honaunau Bay or Two-Step). And to go there, we always use DD and here's why? It always feels like family with them. Captains and crew are always accommodating, professional, courteous and fun! And today's trip with Landon was no different. Even saw a few dolphins while at Cook's Cove.

This excursion was okay at best. Though we were able to see dolphins, which was lovely, the snorkeling was blah. First the company took us south along the island, versus out into the ocean, and guided us snorkeling right by a power plant on the shoreline. There were some pretty fish, maybe 3-4 different species. The coral was not colorful; they informed us that is typical for Hawaii. Friends we have that live on the islands state there are beautiful coral reefs, you just need to know where to find them. Apparently, this company does not know where to find these reefs. The catamaran ride was just lovely, but that's it. Again, nothing special. The crew were fine when talking to us as a group but not one-on-one. Then they seemed guarded and annoyed. I would not recommend this excursion.

Captain Rick and Amazing Amanda were truly spectacular hosts / guides! I really enjoyed it...and we saw big dolphins, small whales, spinner dolphins (with babies), and tons of snorkeling at Capt Cook. One of the highlights of the trip! An added benefit....the lunch they serve had fantastic bread for their sandwiches! I was pleasantly surprised considering this was not a Hugh expectation of a quick day trip!

We went on the night manta ray snorkel and it was a bucket list experience for sure! Before going I was a bit nervous about jumping in the ocean at night-but the crew made us super comfortable and I felt well taken care of. The water was surprisingly warm and 45 minutes in the water was up in the blink of an eye. Do not hesitate! We also loved that it was a super short boat ride to where the rays were.
