The Eiger

Reviewed By Graeme74 - Glasgow, United Kingdom

Lucked out with a perfect sunny, cloudless day for this simply stunning route. Was a bit nervous reading some reviews as I only had running shoes and clothing (and a small back pack with thin sweater and water/snacks). Climb out of Lauterbrunnen to Wengen is sharp but lovely - in the trees but regular gaps to see the incredible Lauterbrunnen valley and waterfalls. Once in pretty Wengen, it was a beautiful hike/run along above the valley all the way eventually to Kleine Scheidegg, passing a few train stops and info signs for exhilarating ski runs. The views of the Jungfrau, Monch and Eiger - as well as countless other snow peaked beauties and look backs down to the valley were incredible throughout. After some rest and drink/food in Kleine Scheidegg, it was a short walk/run up to Eigergletscher station, which is nestled right under the start of the Eiger Trail. I was advised there was snow still in a round a dozen gullies on the path - so was a little early in my well worn grip running shoes. But that, and the scree elements were very easy with just some basic care when crossing those short sections (usually 10-20 careful side steps were enough.) I can imagine earlier in year it would be quite different, and require better equipment and boots - and also on a different day in heavy wind/rain would be a totally different prospect - so carefully consider weather, as well of course your fitness. But there were many others of varying fitness and hiking experience out there, so I think on a sunny day in mid-summer it’s a very doable trail as long as reasonably fit. The traverse under the Eiger’s north face is incredible - watching the rock climbers above was breathtaking! A few short, steep ups and downs, but nothing overly taxing in each of those and the path is well defined and worn-in throughout. Amazing waterfall just before main descents start before Alpiglen. From there, it’s a long, steady and at times fairly steep descent for many km’s into Grindelwald - could be difficult if you have knee or ankle issues, but fun otherwise. Can’t recommend enough for a few hours to see some of the most incredible and varied scenes in the world! Again, just consider the weather, your fitness, time of year, equipment/gear needed and water/snacks. Have fun ????????

Oeschinen Lake

Oeschinensee is accessible by foot from Kandersteg within 1.5 hours. The cable car operates in summer and winter season daily from mornings till evenings - non stop. In summer enjoy swimming in the lake, boat rides on the blue and clear water or just have fun with the toboggan run at the top station of the cable car. Several hotels around the lake offer rooms in summer. Restaurants are open in winter and summer. The region belongs to the Unesco heritage Jungfrau-Aletsch.

Easily accessible for families with small children. The lake can be reached after a 30min walk or in 5min via a small electric bus (8CHF each way). The views are breathtaking and there is a nice restaurant by the lake to enjoy a meal. Not to be missed!

The charming Gothic Berner Münster is the country's tallest cathedral. After the plague came to Bern in 1526, many citizens converted to Reformation and by 1528 masses were stopped and icons cast out and the church became a reformation church.

Jungfraujoch

Icy air streams across your face, snow crunches under your feet, and the view nearly takes your breath away: on one side the view of the Mittelland up to the Vosges, on the other the Aletsch glacier, bordered by four thousand metre peaks. Standing on the Jungfraujoch 3,454 metres above sea level, you can feel it with your first step: this is a different world. It's one you have to experience.

Schloss Thun

The medieval castle above the town of Thun is a striking focal point at the entrance to the Bernese Oberland region. This almost completely preserved symbol of power contains the Knights' Hall, one of the few surviving halls of its type from the Middle Ages. Built at the end of the 12th century by the Dukes of Zahringen as a purely administrative castle, this striking building was extended by its new owners, the Bernese, with its impressive roof in the 15th century. The five floors of the castle now house a historical museum highlighting the region's history, as well as host temporary exhibitions on a variety of cultural, historical and current issues. Concerts and other public events are held in the intact knight's hall. The corner towers of Thun Castle provide an unforgettable view over the city of Thun, Lake Thun and the mountains.
