What to do and see in Canterbury Region, South Island: The Best Lessons & Workshops

October 30, 2021 Kandra Bartel

Christchurch, the Garden City, and the Canterbury region are the perfect destination for daredevils. From northern Kaikoura to Waimate in the south, Canterbury is an adventure sports paradise. Hangliding, helibiking, bungee jumping, snowboarding, jetboating, rafting and skydiving get the adrenaline going. Golfing, flightseeing, swimming with dolphins and soaking in thermal pools are more laid-back temptations. Christchurch, a city of parks and gardens, is the country’s third largest urban area.

The Bone Dude's Carving Studio

Our original Studio on Fitzgerald Ave was wrecked by the earthquake on February 22nd 2011. I was able to salvage all of my equipment and convert my garage at home on Marshland Rd into a new studio which was open until March 2016. We have moved to Birdlings Flat which is 45kms from the center of Christchurch on the Christchurch/Akaroa Rd. The new Studio has taken 7 months to rebuild and is now ready for people wishing to make their own Bone Carving with us. The French Connection shuttle stops at Birdlings Flat at 10am in the morning on its run to Akaroa and returns at 4pm on the return trip back to Christchurch for those that require transport. Birdlings Flat is one of the great Gemstone beaches of New Zealand and we hope that any visitors to our Studio take the time to explore this stretch of coastal NZ. At this stage we are running 2 sessions a week, Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings but we can also run other sessions but conditions do apply. Email or call, all inquiries welcome. John & Barb

Me and my wife did the 2 hour trek on my Birthday. Guide Sophie was amazing, who shared a lot of knowledge about horses. The whole team there were friendly and made sure we first timers had no issues. One hour trek covers crossing the river, two hour covers both river crossing and an amazing scenic inland path. If you are a first timer and fit enough, don't miss the two hour trek, it is an great life time experience. If not so fit at least try the one hour trek, you won't regret it. Shout out to the horses Nemo and Sid, they were well behaved and made us feel very comfortable.
