What to do and see in Canterbury Region, South Island: The Best Horseback Riding Tours

August 10, 2021 Florencio Paulino

Christchurch, the Garden City, and the Canterbury region are the perfect destination for daredevils. From northern Kaikoura to Waimate in the south, Canterbury is an adventure sports paradise. Hangliding, helibiking, bungee jumping, snowboarding, jetboating, rafting and skydiving get the adrenaline going. Golfing, flightseeing, swimming with dolphins and soaking in thermal pools are more laid-back temptations. Christchurch, a city of parks and gardens, is the country’s third largest urban area.

Me and my wife did the 2 hour trek on my Birthday. Guide Sophie was amazing, who shared a lot of knowledge about horses. The whole team there were friendly and made sure we first timers had no issues. One hour trek covers crossing the river, two hour covers both river crossing and an amazing scenic inland path. If you are a first timer and fit enough, don't miss the two hour trek, it is an great life time experience. If not so fit at least try the one hour trek, you won't regret it. Shout out to the horses Nemo and Sid, they were well behaved and made us feel very comfortable.

I had such a great experience on the horse trek. Right from the start it was really good, I was able to get to know the pony by taking up and grooming him. The pony I rode, Jonathan, was super friendly and full of energy, this is exactly what I like to experience when I go on a trek. As I did the beach ride his energy on the beach made it thoroughly enjoyable to have a good canter. Inga was really helpful and it was great to have a guide that was so passionate about the horses. It was really special to be able to experience the tolt. This is 100% a one of a kind horse trek.

My wife and I, ages 73 and 71 were on this 3 day horse trek in February pf 2020. Our horse trek with HIGH COUNTRY HORSE ADVENTURES exceeded our expectations, and our expectations were high. James Cagney, owner of the company, was also our guide, and was assisted by Karly. They were always there when needed and were particularly attentive to everyone's safety. Although they were non-stop busy, they never seemed hurried. The horses were wonderful, the scenery spectacular and the trail food was good. We are beginner/novice level riders and were comfortable at all times. We highly recommend this experience and look forward to going back ourselves,
