What to do and see in Canterbury Region, South Island: The Best Forests

February 17, 2022 Madelene Haan

Christchurch, the Garden City, and the Canterbury region are the perfect destination for daredevils. From northern Kaikoura to Waimate in the south, Canterbury is an adventure sports paradise. Hangliding, helibiking, bungee jumping, snowboarding, jetboating, rafting and skydiving get the adrenaline going. Golfing, flightseeing, swimming with dolphins and soaking in thermal pools are more laid-back temptations. Christchurch, a city of parks and gardens, is the country’s third largest urban area.

Great mountain biking for all the family! We had a fabulous mid winter trip to Hanmer and spent two mornings exploring the mountain bike tracks in the Hanmer forest with our kids 6&8. Lots of fun on snakes and ladders and brilliant to have a station to clean the bikes off afterwards. Great tool set there too to pump tyres, adjust seat height etc.

Various pathways through the native trees with many birds so very close to the township. It's a workout ie not flat - has views over the town.

Lovely forest that is near the cbd but feels like you are far from the city. It has good bike trails which my kids who are 5 year and 7 years really enjoyed. Its a massive land with many turns so make sure you have your google maps. There are however maps in several places in the forest . A good place to relax and enjoy the day
