I came here as part of The Lost Sound - Dartmoor Folk Choir to sing a concert. A fabulous venue from our point of view - clean and spacious green room facilities; and great performance space - warm, intimate, well lit, and a great audience. Photo by Andrew Lester, taken during our gig. Downloaded from The Lost Sound facebook page.

The Tamar Valley Line from Plymouth to Gunnislake is one of the South West's most scenic branch lines. Highlights include great views of the Royal Albert Bridge, the journey through the rolling countryside and crossing the 120-ft high Calstock viaduct. Calstock is a great place to get off - with a top country pub serving excellent food and a riverside walk to the National Trust's Cotehele property.

A courageous conversion has made the engine house of a former mine a lovely and interesting Landmark. Standing by a stream in a steep wooded valley leading down to the Tamar, the mine worked on and off from 1822 to 1900. Danescombe Mine can be booked for short breaks with the Landmark Trust, a charity that restores historic buildings at risk and makes them available for holidays.

A circular walk through the gardens of Cotehele to Calstock where Cornwall's largest Roman fort once stood, the Vikings allied with the Cornish to fight off the Saxons, and more recently railway wagons were lifted over 100ft by steam power from the quay to the top of the viaduct. 5.9 miles. Steepness: moderate-strenuous.
Going from Cotehele (with a tea shop, medieval manor and gardens ), to the old market garden quayside and quaint steep-sided valley that nestles Calstock, this stroll starts with a steep descent through ancient moss-covered beech and oak woods. It then takes the lower road past the boatyard and picturesque terrace houses. Of curious note are the doors in the high retaining walls of Well Street, where long ago the locals carried water to yard and table.
