Peter Bayly Wines

Boutique winery situated at the foot of the majestic Swartberg Mointain in the picturesque Groenfontein Valle 15 kilometers north of Calitzdorp

Our favourite winery. My mother and I visit every year and enjoy sitting on the veranda whilst being talked through the latest on Peters wines, sheer indulgence! It’s our annual treat, the Groenfontein area around Calitzdorp is a magical area filled with special people and delicious eateries. We love Peters small bottles of Port and he has a wonderful selection of vintage bottles to satisfy all. We tend to stock up to last as through the year. His Wife Yvonne also sells wonderful stuffed piggies, ideal for gifts which support a local township project. Thank you to Peter and Yvonne. Margaret and Sarah.

Rooiberg Pass

Reviewed By LauraL8697 - Calitzdorp, South Africa

We traversed this pass from Callitzdorp to Van Wyksdorp and is described in Mountain Passes of South Africa as follows"This is not a pass to be trifled with and although it can be driven in a normal car, a high clearance vehicle would be better. It is also a long pass at 14 km and contains some fairly rough sections. There are a total of 69 bends, corners and curves which include 6 hairpins and many other bends with a turning radius in excess of 90 degrees. It's a road for the less hurried traveller and offers wonderful views on both the northern and southern sides with valleys and ridges bedecked in fynbos and in winter you'll be treated to the sight of the bright orange flowers of hundreds of thousands of flowering aloes." The total road is over 50kms with a second lesser known pass before your reach your destination Assegaaibosch Pass This road is bumpy, dusty and quite a challenge ubtil you reach Rooiberg Lodge area

We had an amazing experience. Hosts were friendly and made us laugh, wine was good and I loved the variety/change of the Portuguese wines mixed in! They do an extensive wine and olive tasting and the olives with a bite are to die for. We bought a bunch of each and will go back. Highly recommend a stop if you are anywhere close by to this lovely family run place!

We always visit Boplaas when in the vicinity and stock up on their good wines. The range has extended and now includes their own whisky and gin. They also have a tempting range of local olives, sauces, preserves and dried fruit products Added bonus - they keep Peter Bayly port too, another favorite. Since our last visit a few years ago, they have added a Bistro. We had a great cheese platter accompanied by some of their wine and grape juice for the driver. Always well worth a visit
