What to do and see in California, United States: The Best Lessons & Workshops

November 21, 2021 Leonardo Torrence

California is a fertile, peaceful place where you’ll find a near-equal balance of vineyards and deserts, beaches and mountains, hippies and traditionalists. Catch an epic wave in Big Sur or swirl a glass in Napa Valley. Be dazzled by the Joshua Tree night sky or just star-gaze in Hollywood. Swish down the slopes of a Tahoe ski resort, or cruise across the Golden Gate Bridge with the top down and the music blasting. Above all, don’t forget to soak up some Golden State sunshine.

Market Forays

Market Forays offers Locavore Cooking Classes and Culinary Adventures for leisure travelers. Sustainable Team Building Events for Corporate Groups. Private Chef Services. Our classes are built around the freshest seasonal local ingredients, combined with a playful attitude that draws on my French upbringing, enriched by the cuisines of the many countries I have visited and by California's own multicultural richness. The preferences and restrictions of my guests are built into the day's lesson plan to ensure that everyone enjoys the experience. Sample menus can be viewed on the Market Forays website. Classes are hands-on, and a printed recipe guide is provided to each guest. The goal is not to impress you with my skills, it is to help you realize your own abilities. Saturday Market Forays classes begin at 8 in the morning at the harbor, continue on to the farmers market, and then we cook and share a feast. Class wraps up around 3:30 pm. Cost is $145 per person. Private classes available during the week, advance reservation is required.

Santa Barbara Art Glass

Make something beautiful: in our private glassblowing class for two with an item to take home. A stone's throw from Stearn's Wharf rests Saul Alcaraz's studio, Santa Barbara Art Glass, where you'll discover blown glass is functional art -- and that you're capable of creating a masterpiece.

We attended Saul’s glass blowing class in Santa Barbara. It was an amazing experience - such an unusual and fun activity ! Saul did an excellent job teaching and guiding us through the art of making our own blown glass objects. My friend made a delicate bowl and I made a glass “bauble” to place in a large bowl with other objects. The furnace is very hot, so I recommend wearing lightweight clothing. There is also a shop with beautiful glass creations for sale. What an enjoyable afternoon!

The Painted Cabernet

The Painted Cabernet is a locally-owned Paint and Sip studio, not a franchise. Our instructional artist will guide you through the painting one step at a time, giving one-on-one instruction while giving you the time to sip a little wine, visit with your neighbor, listen to some great music and have a fun night out. The studio offers a variety of fabulous choices for your personal masterpiece, and offers fabulous wines from the Central Coast region as well as local beer options.

San Diego Sand Castles

The best way to spend time on San Diego's beaches is by doing something unique - build a professional style sand castle! San Diego Sand Castles isn't a gallery, competition, or "thing to see" for public viewing (please don't come to our address expecting to see sand castles!) In fact, we're a far more interactive reservations-required beachside "thing to do" where your group gets to be the artists! San Diego Sand Castles specializes in sand castle lessons for people of all ages all year-round! Our sand castle lessons are a lot of fun, are educational, and a great way to spend time on the beach in San Diego. When the instructors aren't happily teaching sand castle lessons, they are often working on professional masterpiece commissioned sculptures or you can often find them creating their own unique ideas!

This was absolutely amazing fun! Family memory created and cherished. JT was a wonderfully casual and knowledgable teacher of the magic of sand castle building. This makes for a great experience gift it to yourself or someone you love.
