We had an amazing day with Nuno. He took us to off-road areas, he was patient with us ans taught us all of his knowledge about the plants and the local history. Madeira is the whole world in a tiny size: within a 15 minutes drive one can feel in Ireland, in Hawai or in Central Asia. All of these with the soft-temper of Nuno and the Portuguese. I was concerned this day-trip could be a tourist rip off as one experiences sometimes. But it was not and we had an unforgetfull day. Do not pass on this day-trip!

We are one of the smaller operators on the island and all our hikes are in small groups of 7 persons maximum. This creates a more intimate setting where everybody can hear the guide and feel more involved in the experience. We take our time and personalise the experience according to the day, the weather and group dynamic and we are very attentive to our clients photography needs. Nobody regrets booking with us.

We just completed a full-day west end tour led by Jeff. It was a fantastic day all around. Jeff arrived on time and showed us many beautiful sights we never would have found on our own. We did some off-roading in his Land Rover and felt completely at ease with him driving on these Madeira roads. We then went and saw many of the highlights of the north west side of the island. We were very happy to have the entire day rather than a half-day, which would have felt too short. Jeff listened to what we wanted to do and customized the day for us. A great value too. I highly recommend this tour.

My guide, Jeff De Gouveia, took me in his Land Rover for an adventurous and informative 4x4 tour of Madeira. Driving from Funchal, we quickly reached Pico do Arieiro, 1,800 metres high, which looks like Scotland or New Zealand. We drove along cobbled roads, originally built by the king and then walked along a levada – part of a 500-mile network of irrigation channels which make ideal trekking routes. After walking along Balcaoes levada, which offers splendid views of a laurel forest gorge, we reached a stunning viewpoint, where birdlife may be spotted, from kestrels and buzzards to robins and the Madeira firecrest. Next was Santana village, famous for traditional thatched houses, and Caniçal, a former whaling village where scenes from 1956 movie Moby Dick were filmed, before heading back to Funchal. It’s a very interesting, entertaining and sociable way to explore off the beaten track and find out about Madeira from a chatty, friendly local. hittheroadmadeira.com [email protected]

The south west Madeira half day tour begins in Prazeres. Here we have a huge rocky scene that is typical Madeira, here we visit the Farm Animal and try its famous Jellies. We go through Paul do Mar until we get to the Fajã da Ovelha. This site surprises for its magnificent and quiet giving feeling that we are the only local residents. To conclude this itinerary, we have the lighthouse of Ponta do Pargo, situated 312 meters high where you can see breathtaking views of the ocean and the roughness of the landscape.

This tour begins in Porto Moniz at 09:00 a.m, proceeding to a viewpoint with a superb view to the village of Porto Moniz, famous for its natural pools. We start offroad towards Levada Ribeira da Janela. This is an excellent levada that has its beginning in Lamaceiros, Porto Moniz. Along its 5 km, the levada takes you to the interior of this unique valley of Ribeira da Janela. Along the way there are several tunnels that make this a different experience. The ground inside the tunnel can be slippery and there can be some water falling from the rocks. After finishing Levada Ribeira da Janela, we go back to Lamaceiros and stop in a typical Madeira Restaurant for lunch (foods and drinks not included) In the afternoon, we go to Calhau das Achadas viewpoint. Then we go to Capela da Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte - Cabo. The next stop is in Ponta de Pargo Light House. We return to Fonte do Bispo in off road, returning after to your hotel.
Inclusions: WiFi on board
Exclusions: Breakfast, Lunch

Hidden between the valleys of the North of Madeira Island there is a sea level small piece of land that stays in the memory of everyone who visits it. Historically this was an agriculture area. Wine was its most important product and everything was done using traditional tools and methods. Nowadays this is a protected area. No electricity grid and almost no cell service. This is a great place to walk, relax and enjoy the view. This tour begins in Porto Moniz at 09:00 and we head towards the Calhau das Achadas da Cruz. We return to The Feira do Gado Picnic Park. In afternoon we go to Paul da Serra to see several viewpoints. The next stop is Ponta de Pargo Light House. After that we visit the Garganta Funda Viewpoint and continue to Pico Vermelho Viewpoint, stands on a cliff, 420 metres above sea level with a beautiful view to Atlantic Ocean. Then we go offroad to to Capela da Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte - Cabo, returning after to your hotel.

The Lagoa do Vento is a river basin formed by the water which fall from the top of the cliff, coming from the Ribeira do Lajeado and moving towards the waterfall (or cascade) of Risco. This tour begins in Porto Moniz at 09:00. We go to Rabaçal and we start Vereda da Lagoa do Vento, in a two-hour walk and we arrived at Wind Lagoon and Waterfalls. The existence of several water streams, derived from small branches of the main creeks of the area, demands the walker to be the extremely careful during its crossing. However, as it is a transitional area between the heath and the Laurel Forest, classified as Natural World Heritage by UNESCO since December 1999. When we finish the walk we stop to have lunch in Rabaçal. In the afternoon, we go down the off road to Estrela da Calhea and Prazeres village, following to Ponta de Pargo Light House. We later visit the amazing viewpoint called the Garganta Funda Viewpoint. Then we go offroad to Capela da Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte - Cabo
Inclusions: WiFi on board

Wow what a fabulous day! We wanted to incorporated what is usually two separate tours into one. So cave and volcanism centre and waterfalls. Well our guide managed to fit everything we wanted into an action packed day. Our guide was Victor. He was knowledgeable, friendly accommodating and great fun too. By the end of the day it felt like we had made a new friend. Nothing was too much trouble. We would definitely recommend the company and Victor if you want to spend a day exploring all that Madeira’s beautiful nature has to offer.
