What to do and see in Cagliari, Sardinia: The Best Walking Tours

September 7, 2021 Jeremy Dunfee

Sardinia’s largest city (with a little over 150,000 people) and its capital for centuries, Cagliari on the island’s south coast offers the perfect mix of recreation and exploration options. The five-mile-long Poetto Beach is among the best city beaches on the Mediterranean, and together with the adjacent Marina Piccola, satisfies all manner of sun and sea pursuits. Seekers of culture will love Cagliari’s old district, Castello, where 13th-century towers still guard the medieval city walls.

The tour includes a visit to the village museum of San Sperate, the birthplace of the recently disappeared Pinuccio Sciola, artist and sculptor of the stones (he could magically make them play). Along the streets, we will find several of his works and his biggest import: the murals. These are paintings on the walls of the houses they tell about the history and the daily habits of the village. Every corner of the country breathes art and culture that meet with the kindness and availability of the inhabitants.

A brilliant experience and one of the highlights of our trip! Thank you to Isabella, Valerio, Rosanna and the rest of the family for hosting us in your beautiful home - We truly felt welcomed as friends. We had so much fun learning about Sardinian culture and making traditional culurgiones and malloreddus. We enjoyed coffee, breads, cold cuts and cheeses with honey, and our pasta with wine and profiteroles for dessert. We couldn't have asked for a more authentic experience. We also followed Isabella and Valerio's recommendations for Osteria Kobuta and Baccu Cardu, which were amazing. Highly, highly recommend! (We'd love to come again!)

Enjoy the best views over the Poetto beach and Molentargius ponds and an energizing walk to the top of the promontory symbol of the city, surrounded by nature! Immerse in the scents and aromas of the Mediterranean Maquis, we will retrace the history of the city in a pleasant walk through archaeology and nature, up to the top, where we will see the ruins of the Temple of Astarte, ruins of the Tower of Sant’Elia, of a fort of the II World War, a Roman cistern and a Punic one. The tour underground Cagliari is an unusual and exclusive experience: hidden under the layers of the modern town there's a whole world made of caves, crypts and galleries. Must see is the Tunnel – Shelter of the Salesian School, a long private gallery used during the II World War as a shelter to the school students from the bombings. Today the gallery almost looks a mystic place with its red-bricked arcades, enlightened by soft candle lights.

We traveled from Cagliari to the Alghero region and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. It was a long drive but worth it! Raffaela was an exceptional guide and hostess. We sensed from the beginning that she was very knowledgeable, resourceful, and proud of Sardinia. We quickly bonded with her because of her extremely friendly personality. Raffaela went over and above expectations for a guide. Her patience, her adaptability and the care she took of us were of note. She is an excellent driver and we felt very safe in her extremely capable hands. We learned a lot about this beautiful country and she made us fall in love with Sardinia. We shall come back! We absolutely recommend Raffaela for any guide requirement anyone may have in Sardinia.
