The Winding House is the museum for Caerphilly County Borough with engaging exhibitions on local history and heritage, hands-on activities and an exciting events programme. Explore local history and culture in our fascinating exhibitions and discover the original Victorian winding engine which runs on the last Saturday of every month (except for December) at 12pm. Our Coffee Shop offers delicious, traditional cakes, teas and coffees, while high quality souvenirs and crafts are available in our Gift Shop.
I grew up in Bargoed and brought my family and in-laws back for a visit. I’d never heard of the Winding House - what a treat it was on a damp March afternoon! The Winding House machinery enticed the kids immediately - the sheer size and the fact that you are up close and can touch it etc gave them a real insight into the realities of our mining heritage. The information on the closure of local pits and the Senghenydd mining disaster was well communicated. Even better though was the West Gallery, which has a comprehensive history of the county from the Iron Age to the present day. I’ve never seen such a wealth of information communicated so effectively to kids and adults in a small local museum - this is the quality you would only expect of a top national museum or prestige CADW castle. Lots of stuff to keep the kids engaged - dressing up, wooden models, an air raid shelter and Roman armour Nice coffee shop, good facilities, an excellent selection of books and cards, and friendly staff too. Very definitely worth a visit if you are in the area - and hugely interesting for those with any connection to the Rhymney Valley.

Lots of lovely walks. Some breathtaking views over the Bristol Channel from the south side of the mountain. Many footpaths around the mountain. Can see horses, cows and sheep on some of the public footpath routes.

Beautiful scenery and a nice little walk for the kids. They can adventure on top of the pit pony or up on to the look out spot. A lovely place to get some fresh air and kill a few hours as a family.

Worth a visit to see the design of this bridge and to learn about the history. The Man on the roundabout also is very eye catching and significant.
