Bytom (Polish pronunciation: [ˈbɨtɔm] ( listen); Silesian: Bytůń, German: Beuthen O.S.) is a city in Silesia in southern Poland, near Katowice. It lies in the central-western district of the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union – a metropolis with a population of 2 million. Bytom is located in the Silesian Highlands, on the Bytomka river (tributary of the Kłodnica).

The Upper Silesian Museum in Bytom continues the traditions of the local museum. It was founded in the early twentieth century by members of the Historical and Museum Society of Bytom (Beuthener Geschichtsund Museumsverein). The museum has numerous exhibits in its collections which comprise archeology, ethnography, history, art and nature. Exhibitions can be seen in the modernist building at Sobieskiego Square and in the neo-Gothic building of the former District Office at Korfantego Street. Over 1,000,000 exhibits in the collection, 5 science departments and a specialized library with 60,000 volumes.
