With soft openings since July, this tucked away jewel located north of Bertram is going to stand out as a top quality fine wine destination in the northern Texas Hill Country. Jerry and Janis Horne’s path to a winery career began many years ago with a casual conversation and visits to California wineries. That passion and love for what they do has matured into a beautiful estate vineyard and wine tasting room. The vineyard itself has been a work-in-progress for that last two years. They currently have about seven acres (hmm, seven again…) of grape vines with a mix of Mourvèdre , Tannat, Vermentino, Alicante Bouschet and Souzao planted. Tasting some of the grapes from the Souzao vines was an ‘OH MY’ and then some experience! Bob Young and Ron Yates are some of the winemakers helping them out on their first start. Current wine selections have grapes sourced from California and Texas. For the whites, the 2017 Chardonnay (Lodi) is aged in stainless still and exhibits great minerality, good acids, and a clean crisp taste! For reds, 2017 Mourvedre is sourced from the Texas High Plains AVA and shows off some great earthy notes. If you like Zinfandel, then you’ll do somersaults over this Lodi 40+ year old-vine 2016 vintage. It smooths out quite well with lingering notes of jam. Got Alicante Bouschet? 7 Creeks does with their 2017 High Plains release. The garnet color is wonderful to gaze at with a touch of leather aftertaste. Don’t forget to also try their Alta Mesa AVA sourced Souzao. If you love red wines and appreciate great meat parings, the 2015 Souzao vintage will have you hooked! Scheduled for release in the fall, will be a Tannat, a Muscat Blend, and a superb Syrah Rose’….worth a return trip! And what’s a quality wine tasting with the bubbles? The 2014 Cuvée Blanc de Blanc is sourced from Lodi Chardonnay and made in the “Méthode Champenoise” way. You can taste the greatness in every bubble! With some nice estate homes being built nearby, as well as, proximity to the booming Liberty Hill area, wine traffic will not be a problem here. Stop by and enjoy their great hospitality!

Lake in Texas' Hill Country known for great freshwater fishing.
I discovered last weekend a trail inside the park that I hadn't been aware before and consider it the best of it. It starts at the "birds blind" in the northern part of the park and meanders along the coast line, up and down a beautiful rocky coast. It's romantic and also offers a lot of opportunities to take a swim in Inks Lake.

Site of historic fort, established to protect settlers from Indian attacks is today a museum with self-guided tours of the grounds, including 150 year old log cabins, blacksmith shop, one room schoolhouse, and antique farm iimplements. Open April through mid October, Thursday-Saturday 10AM-5PM, FREE ADMISSION Annual Events: Fort Croghan Day, 2nd Saturday in October and Christmas at Old Fort Croghan, 2nd Saturday in December, both with reenactors in period dress.
I visited soon after it reopened, having closed for a time due to Covid. The museum and grounds are a treasure trove of history with numerous artifacts and cabins, buildings and more dating back to the mid 1800's along with stories of interest about many of these items. There is no admission but donations are accepted. The volunteers are amazing and a wealth of knowledge. Highly recommend!

Located less than 90 minutes from Austin, Texas, Longhorn Cavern State Park is a unique Hill Country destination full of natural beauty and Texas-sized tales. Developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the park’s star attraction is Longhorn Cavern, an underground wonder created by the dissolving and cutting action of an ancient river. Enjoy a guided cave tour, hike a Hill Country trail, and admire some of Texas' best examples of historic CCC architecture. It's all part of the story of Longhorn Cavern State Park.
This was our second time at the cavern, but the first time with our daughter, visiting the first time before she was born. The drive is lovely on Rt 4 with lots of ups and downs and WHEEs and gorgeous scenery. The park building is a neo-historical cottage built when the cavern was opened in the 1930s. Tours leave every hour on the hour starting at 10 am, and last about 1.5 hours. Our guide was Anna, and she was funny and super informational at the same time. The cave is beautiful, at times you really work some muscles as you can't walk upright for a bit, but at no point it is hard or unsafe for anyone who is in a reasonable physical condition. We also counted about 17 tiny tricolored bats (they aren't really tricolored unless you see them under a microscope, they just look black). They roost alone, anre really small and utterly adorable. Photography is allowed, (bats no-flash only), but no food or drink except plain water. There is a small snack bar and a well-stocked gift shop inside the main building, and by a short walk there is an observation tower that provides a great view of the surrounding vista. Definitely recommending for anyone, except perhaps really small children as strollers and such are not allowed.

A 1,200-acre state park known for the 803-acre Inks Lake used for fishing, scuba diving and other water sports.
Visited while in Marble Falls on vacation. I recommend booking day passes ahead of time. We would of been turned away if we hadn't. We did not enjoy the water due to the toxic algae in the water. We were traveling with our dog and the algae levels were too high at this time. There were several people enjoying the water, kayaking, paddle boarding, and jumping from the rocks at devil's waterhole. We did hike to the overlook and really enjoyed our time in the park.

Scenic and challenging, this 6,829-yard, par 72 course features Tiff Dwarf greens and Bermuda fairways and tees.
Played on a UT home game Saturday. Pace of play was just over 4.5 hours. We got paired with two other guys who had played before. Local knowledge is helpful. For the price, this was outstanding.
