India’s Lonar Crater was identified in 1823 by a British officer named C.J.E. Alexander. Lonar Crater sits inside the Deccan Plateau is created by meteorite impact that occurred between 35,000 and 50,000 years ago. Lonar Crater is approximately 150 meters (500 feet) deep, with an average diameter of almost 1,830 meters (6,000 feet). The water is very much alkaline as such no fish or water animal can live in this water. One guide tested this water taken in a glass & poured some turmeric in it which turns this water into bloody red colour. This prove alkaline nature of the water. There is a temple of Lord Hanumanji near whose idol is made of pieces of meteorite as heard from local people. Also a temple named Daityasudan Mandir is about 1 or 2 KM from Lonar. Terracota artifacts are there on the walls of this temple.

Visited Gajanan Maharaj Canteen running in the complex situated at Omkareshwar, M.P. Excellent system they follow, most subsidised rates and cooked with love and affection in a clean environment. It is self service to buy your meal ₹ 35/- for unlimited food with 2 dal, 1 sabji, rice, roti / Chapati and a small portion of dessert. They have rooms too for pilgrims touring river Narmada that flows few metres away from this Ashram. Worth a visit..

The Lonar Lake a.k.a. Lonar Crater was created by a meteor impact and is believed to be around 500,000 years old. It was initially belived to have been formed due to volcano. The lake is about 500ft deep and is majorly saline with few sections of fresh water. There are such 4 craters on our planet which were formed due to either comet or asteroid impact, 3 of them are in Brazil and this one's in the heart of Maharashtra. A short trek down through the forest takes you to the sarovar (lake). It is located in Buldhana district around 150kms from Aurnagabad and the roads are in a brilliant condition. A must visit place for geological enthusiastics.

This temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu is located about 2 kms from the Lonar crater. Not many people visit it, making it an even more appealing place for tourists that prefer places to themselves. Do hire a guide, typically the one who shows people around the Lonar crater also doubles up as a guide for this place.

This temple hides behind its entrance the main route to the bottom of the Lonar crater. Specialty of this place is the 24/7/365 flow of water from an underground spring that is said to owe its genesis to the asteroid impact that created the crater and the lake within.
