Sziget Festival

Reviewed By amyszi - Sandbach, United Kingdom

I went to Sziget Festival for the first time on my own as a single female in 2019, hoping to just do my own thing and meet people there. I left Sziget knowing I'd be going back every year for the rest of my life! It's truly a unique festival from the location to the people. It's called the Island of Freedom and it really does fit the name. The food was decently priced (in comparison to the Spanish and UK festivals I've been to, Sziget was better priced) - pricey for Budapest but cheap for a festival. You can't take alcohol in with you however the drinks prices are relatively well priced with only spirits being a bit too expensive. (But still, in comparison to my other festival experience - still cheaper than average) A lot of people just got into the habit of buying alcohol from the big supermarket nearby and drinking on the grass outside the store to bypass the Sziget prices. The lineup was star studded in 2019 with massive names playing such as Ed Sheeran, The 1975, Franz Ferdinand, Florence and the Machine, Martin Garrix, Macklemore, and others. The stage was easily seen from quite a ways back (I didn't find it necessary to stand on my toes!), with large screens to help with that too. There is so much else to do at Sziget in addition to just the music, art, yoga, sport, swimming, boat parties, relaxing on the beach, dancing, a circus, and so much more. One word of warning, due to the dust and mixing with lots of people you are quite likely to get ill after the festival - so book some recovery time for after the festival!

Budapest Christmas Fair

The Christmas Fair takes place on the Vörösmarty Square in the centre of the city which turns, for a few weeks, into a Winter Market, placed in front of the famous Gerbeaud Coffee House, at the end of the pedestrian street Vaci. Sound, lights and flavours unite the large number of people into a very festive crowd. The scent of Hungarian honey cookies, mulled wine, cinnamon makes everyone feel the celebration of Christmas with all one's senses. The lighting of candles on the Advent Wreath is accompanied by choral singing and all day long you will be tempted by the Hungarian culinary specialties like the stuffed cabbage rolls, roasted goose, foie gras, as good as the French one, grilled paprika sausages and a lot of other Christmas dishes. Wooden stalls and outdoor stages allow craftsmen and artists to show their talent. It is the place where you can buy original hand-crafted gifts for your family and friends. The Fair's visitors will be entertained by folk, jazz, blues, soul, crossover, world music concerts, dance house performances.

One of the best christmas markets in Europe. Everyone catered for and perfect to get into the christmas spirit. Lots of crowds to be expected. Make sure to take in Christmas Market section outside the basilica.
