Famous as the home of Yankee Stadium, elevated trains, and dense apartment blocks, the Bronx is also the greenest of New York City's boroughs. Visit the gorillas at the famous Bronx Zoo or wander through the 50-acre forest at the New York Botanical Garden. Pick up some gourmet foods on Arthur Avenue, the Bronx's Little Italy, and have a picnic at Van Cortlandt Park, which features two square miles of boating, horseback riding, tennis, and the oldest public golf course in the United States.

The oldest house in the Bronx, this was the homestead of the Van Cortlandt wheat plantation.
The Van Cortlandt House Museum is a truly remarkable historic gem of Bronx, New York. The Van Cortlandt House is the oldest building in the Bronx, and it is a Georgian style mansion that dates back to 18th Century New York, a time in which slavery was legal and heavily practiced. The home itself was said to have been built by African slaves for the Van Cortlandt Family, a prominent mercantile family, whom founded and operated a grist and plantation mill on the property. When visiting the Van Cortlandt museum in June of 2018, my wife and I were impressed by the house’s carefully preserved Georgian style details. We also viewed and learned much about the multiple furnishings and materials that belonged to the Van Cortlandt Family. Being African Americans, both my wife and I were of course understandably sensitive and saddened to learn about the house’s connection to slavery and the life and treatment of the slaves that worked and lived on the property. For those that enjoy visiting historic homes, learning about 18th Century New York, and it’s Dutch heritage, the Van Cortlandt House Museum is definitely a top destination to visit and sightsee!!!

Yankee Stadium, “The Cathedral Of Baseball” and the home of the New York Yankees, the most successful sports franchise in history. My wife and I have attended multiple New York Yankee games in the past and we’ve always enjoyed our game experience at the Yankee Stadium!!! Both my wife and I were swept by the beauty and design of the stadium’s ballpark, admired the stadium’s homage to the previous Yankees stadiums of the past, enjoyed visiting the New York Yankees Museum, and loved the hundreds of photographs that capture the history of the Yankees and showcase their players of today. Hopefully in the near future, when the days of COVID 19 are long behind us, fans will get to visit Yankees stadium and watch New York Yankees baseball. The Yankee Stadium is undoubtedly the best ballpark ever made!!!

Occupying more than 400 acres in the Bronx, this cemetery is known for the ornate and imaginative mausoleums and monuments of some of the country's most famous industrialists and politicians. Notable individuals include Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Celia Cruz, Irving Berlin, Herman Melville, and many more. Guide maps are available at both cemetery entrances.
When you arrive at the main gate there is an office you can go into and get a map. On the map is where all the famous and interesting people are buried. They also have an app for your phone. It was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Yesterday Sunday, November 3,2019 as I wandered weak and weary, I happened upon the Edgar Allen Poe Cottage on Kingsbridge Road where the famous poet and storyteller lived with his wife Virginia and her Mother in law. Being a self admitted history dork, I was thrilled to see a well preserved example of life in the Bronx when it was considered "the country!" I was greeted by the cordial and extremely knowledgeable caretaker/Tour Guide and host a one Mr. Glen Martinez. He showed me around the tiny cottage and took me through the time that the Poe's were in residence in the Bronx. The house is tiny, but through Glen's expert stort telling,I felt that I could actually picture Poe writing at the small table in the parlor while Virgina was in her bed room off the parlor slowly dying of the disease that finally took her life- Tuberculosis. The cottage is a must see for anyone who loves 18th century literature and NYC history. Glen presents the stories with such authority, you would think that he was a witness to this particular part of history. Do yourself a favor and visit the Poe Cottage. If Glen isn't there or out to lunch, sit down on the porch and wait for him to return!
