The Wildlife & Forts of Berry Head Trail

Came up here for a few hours with the dog. Easy parking, well maintained footpaths and information boards. Panoramic views, dramatic cliffs and on our day bright blue sea, clear to an horizon, many miles away. Many well preserved battlements, a few cannon. Well defined moats and some appropriate modern foot bridges across them. Lots of protective fencing to keep dogs and children from falling from the near sheer cliff edges. At worst, very gentle inclines on a few paths.

This cafe and marine collectables shop is just off the main shopping street near the harbour in Brixham, just up a back alley opposite the co-op. I suspect many people pass it by with no idea it is there. But if you are looking for lunch or coffee and cake then you definitely shouldn't pass by! It is very good. Full of marine collectables and memorabilia from liners, and our food and drink was spot on in every respect. The coffee lounge is kitted out in full-on nautical style, without being kitsch, and we found this environment very likeable. We had a couple of crab salads and hot drinks this lunchtime. They didn't bat an eyelid when we varied the order to exclude the usual granary bread. The food was really good, a likeable and varied salad, the crab was well presented in a little pot and absolutely fresh, piece of lemon, mayo and separate french dressing if you want it. Light lunch size, so set your expectations accordingly. Tea and coffee were well presented, and good quality, with separate little jugs for hot or cold milk as you choose. All for £20 for two, which for something of this quality would not be bettered anywhere I think. Find an excuse to visit the loo - as well as walls full of old marine communications kit, there is a wryly amusing looped speech from a liner captain. We didn't try the cakes, but the pieces going past us to other customers were very large. Service is very well handled, friendly and efficient. Dogs are welcome. Be aware of the opening hours - the cafe is just at lunchtime 10-2. Closed Sundays, and on Saturday they just do tea and cake. And although we went to the coffee lounge, there is an adjoining marine memorabilia section, that is a specialist shop in its own right. Serious pieces, at prices set at a level for those who are happy to spend a good bit on some characterful items.

We did the Teignmouth round robin trip from Brixham. Great value trip. John our skipper was very knowledgeable and pointed out wildlife & rock formations as we sailed along the coast. After a few hours in Teignmouth we caught the train to Paignton where we got back on board to sail back to Brixham. John and Alvin were great & we wouldnt hesitate to book with them again. They are a small family business and deserve support in these difficult times.

As someone who has been to hundreds of museums, this one is excellent. A Tardis-like gem, it has a wide variety of exhibits which are well presented. The text panels have just the right amount of detail. Children also seemed to be engaged by various objects on display. In COVID times, they have installed an easy-to-follow one way system, and they limit guest numbers on entry.

Berry Head National Nature Reserve

This stunning headland, with its iconic lighthouse and Napoleonic Fort, is surrounded by water on three sides and offers exceptional views across Torbay and beyond. You can enjoy some superb coastal walks, spot wildlife on land and at sea, or simply relax in the award-winning Guardhouse Café. Our Visitor Centre will tell you all about the Reserve, its history, wildlife and the work of Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust. Do check for opening times during off peak season. This is a must-visit day out and is either a pleasant walk from up from Brixham or short drive to the visitor car park. Dogs are very welcome throughout the site; leads are required in certain areas. Disability access is good with tarmac or laid paths into both the North and South Forts.

What a beautiful place. We were lucky to have glorious sunshine to explore the interesting history and take in the delightful views out to sea and across to Torquay in all its glory. We enjoyed coffee and then a delicious lunch in the pretty, friendly, efficient Guardhouse cafe. The family took the lovely walk up through the woods, but I,with a damaged knee, was very grateful for the easy walk up the path from the well maintained car park.Berry Head had been highly recommended by 2different sets of friends &certainly lived up to their praises.A superb day.
