What to do and see in Bristol, England: The Best Nature & Wildlife Areas

July 26, 2021 Kelli Reichel

Bristol is a quirky British city with beautiful hilly vistas and plenty of historic sights to explore. Anyone interested in ships will have a blast aboard Brunel’s SS Great Britain, the world’s first great oceanliner, and the Matthew, a replica of the ship upon which John Cabot sailed to America in the 15th century. The graceful Clifton Suspension Bridge is another must-see.

This is a lovely walk near central Bristol with great views from the top where you can sit and chill. The tower was closed for Covid at the time, the view from the top must be even more amazing.

Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

This is one of England's most special places - the limestone Mendip Hills with the lakes of the Chew Valley is a stunning landscape of steep slopes and undulating plateau punctuated by spectacular gorges and rocky outcrops. On the hilltops there are hundreds of ancient monuments, whilst on steeper slopes flower rich grasslands and wooded combes offer varied habitats for a wide variety of wildlife.

The Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a stunning natural area just to the south of Bristol. Limestone rolling hills, with Cheddar Gorge as its touristy heart, the best place near Bristol to get away from city life and explore nature. Simply stunning landscape!

What a lovely walk! Stubled a cross an old WW2 hospital and a log face statue in tribute to the women of WW2 - the wicker whale and nature reserve are the perfect place to wander and forget your thoughts. Also I didn't come across many people and I would advise wearing wellies... lots of muddy paths and steps

This location has a bit of everything: sweeping grassy areas to play on, a children's playground, wooded walks, and a grand old house containing a very interesting museum. Even a folly, if you can find it! There's a sizeable car park with easy tarmacked parking, and a cafe and toilets. Interesting tranquil walks for adults, and amusement for kids in one location.

Absolutely fantastic- we visited with two kids (3 & 5 years old) thinking we would make the best of the changeable weather for an hour or so. We ended up staying for more than 2 hours (and it would have been longer if we didn’t have to get home for tea)! The kids loved exploring the forest, looking for wildlife and using their imaginations- then we went for a ‘paddle’ in the river. If we’d gone on a day when the cafe and mill were open it would have easily filled an entire day. Everyone we met were friendly and I saw no litter or dogs mess. Brilliant afternoon!
