What to do and see in Bristol, England: The Best Lessons & Workshops

June 3, 2021 Emerita Lamoureux

Bristol is a quirky British city with beautiful hilly vistas and plenty of historic sights to explore. Anyone interested in ships will have a blast aboard Brunel’s SS Great Britain, the world’s first great oceanliner, and the Matthew, a replica of the ship upon which John Cabot sailed to America in the 15th century. The graceful Clifton Suspension Bridge is another must-see.

Had an amazing weekend with my wife on the fusing and slumping course. EJ is an amazing teacher and really knew her stuff and she never seemed to get flustered or annoyed at repetitive questions. Was very happy to adapt the course in response to our questions. If we were after anything specific that wasn't in the room they supplied it from the shop. No limit to the number of pieces of work you could create Lunch that was supplied was also very good. Drinks hot and cold supplied thru the day as well as cake in the afternoon. We are already thinking about doing the next two course as well once we have used and improved our skills learnt...and once our work has been posted to us. Also have to mention the shop... Wow designed to empty bank account as there is so much that is desirable. All staff are friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable I cannot recommend Creative Glass Guild highly enough

The Climbing Academy

The Climbing Academy is Bristol's purpose built bouldering facility! Bouldering is a branch of rock climbing, performed at low level, usually above crash mats, and without the hindrance of equipment normally associated with climbing. This allows the participant to fully focus on the techniques and movements and makes it easier for those wishing to climb to gain a safe entry into the activity. We make getting started easy. All you need to do is to come on down, watch our 10 minute safety video and you're climbing. You can then progress through classes and coaching or just by teaching yourself. Kids can get started through Boulder Club, starting with a Taster session (which adults can attend too) and then working up through Levels 1-5 bouldering awards. If you want to climb with your families then the family inductions session is for you. Please see TCA web site for more information and contact details.

More bouldering than you can shake a chalk bag at! There are two floors of bouldering, scores of routes, from pretty easy to downright impossible. Crash mats all round of course. Cafe with drinks and cakes, and a small shop of climbing kit. You can hire shoes too. Loos and lockers (bring your own padlock). TCA used to feel a bit shirts-off blokey, but these days with so many women climbers, that seems to be changing. Staff are always helpful and entry allows you to stay as long as you like - so plenty of time to boulder, eat cake, watch and boulder more. If you are new to climbing, they have beginner sessions, and courses. TCA now own two climbing centres in Bristol... Undercover Rock (The Church) is mostly roped climbs while this place (TCA The Mothership) is all bouldering. TCA is a supporter of Urban Uprising, a charity which uses climbing to inspire and build confidence in young people.
