Renowned for its modernist lines and futuristic design, Brasilia is a study in urban planning and the only city built in the 20th century to be counted among UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. Where only five years before its inception there was desert, now there are innovative buildings and imaginative monuments, ranging from the hyperboloid Cathedral of Brasilia to the lunar-esque Complexo Cultural da Republica to the glass-box Palacio da Alvorada.

I'm learning that light is an important element that enhances all of the features of this World Heritage Site city. I visited the exterior of the stadium as part of a city tour, but I am lucky enough to have a clear view of this landmark from my hotel-- both my room and from the rooftop. Though it hasn't been illuminated while I was here, nevertheless it's lovely to appreciate it in different conditions. I was awakened by a thunderstom before dawn and saw the stadium as a dark sillouette surrounded by city lights, sometimes spotlighted by heat lightening. In the morning, close to sunrise: the building is bathed in glorious yellow sunlight and appears to be almost golden..
