Grant was our guide for Yellowstone Safari Co.'s Private Tour - Winter Wildlife Safari, a day-long private tour that used the park's winter access roads to see Yellowstone in the off season. A biologist by training with over 20 years experience in exploring and explaining wildlife, Grant was an outstanding host and guide. Throughout the day he brought to our attention packs of wolves (resting from a recent successful hunt), bald eagles and ravens (who pointed out the location of the hunt), coyotes (who waited patiently for their turn at the kill), pronghorns (frequently misidentified as antelopes), big horn sheep, two bull moose, and countless herds of elk and bison. The tour included a short and relaxed hike to the boardwalks above the steaming hydrothermal features and travertine terraces in the Mammoth Hot Springs area of the park (pictured), and another hike to a spectacular view of the park's own "grand canyon". When scouting for wildlife, Grant would pull over and set up a sighting scope on its tripod, and then, upon spotting wildlife activity, he would set up two more scopes for my son and me - so all three of us could track the activity at the same time. (This is pretty important, as the activity was rarely sedentary, so if we were to see the action each of us needed our own scope - which was steadier and more powerful than binoculars. Very thoughtful!) The Excellent rating is based largely on the expertise Grant brought to the tour, as well as his attention to our personal comfort. The ride (pictured) was roomy, and we all followed the necessary COVID-19 restrictions (masks and a plexiglass barrier between driver and passengers). He provided snacks, water, and a catered box lunch - all first rate. He made sure to take restroom breaks as needed, and filled drive-time by relating discoveries and experiences from his service at the park. Clearly he and his fellow guides love the park and collectively work to keep the ecosystems healthy, while encouraging visitors to really get to know the value of those systems. This was exactly the kind of experience we hope for when bringing our children to a wildlife preserve.

Immerse yourself in the wildness of Yellowstone’s landscape by utilizing the ancient technology of snowshoes. This tour provides an unmatchable backcountry experience of magnificent winter ecology. Though winter can seem like the least likely time to go for a walk in the woods, it is really one of the most rewarding. Wildlife tracks appear frozen in time, and plants and rivers allow for our reflection on resilience and longevity. On this private full-day snowshoe trek, you will explore the environment in an in-depth, hands-on way. Your expert naturalist guide will interpret what you find and what you see, and you may be surprised with the story that arises.

Inclusions: Hotel pickup, Professional naturalist guide, Private safari, Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, Souvenir water bottle, Use of spotting scopes and binoculars, Use of snowshoeing equipment

We really enjoyed our afternoon of zip lining! Even this 50-something mom was made to feel comfortable and confident by our guides who were patient and helpful and explained things well. I was pretty nervous, but they made it a lot of fun - especially the zips over the river! I hope to go again sometime!
