Mulgowan (Yapa) Aboriginal Rock Art Site

The ancient petroglyph rock art is located within Gundabooka National Park 20 kms off Kidman Way on sandy dirty track that is marked by National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) signs to the Mulgowan carpark & picnic site. From here a marked NPWS path leads up & into the dry Mulareenya creek where the Yapa rock art can be found under the ledge. The NPWS have constructed walking ledges & have caged off the actual petroglyphs.

We drove in from Kidman Way and was an easy drive on the red dirt road in our Ford Escape. We saw kangaroos, lizards and feral goats on the drive in. The walk itself is quite easy and well signposted. Beautiful/other worldly scenery and the art work was well maintained and interesting. Some more explanatory signage would have been awesome particularly of this one work that we were quite intrigued by (see first picture). We visited Mt Grenfell historic site and recommend both (art more accessible at Mt Grenfell but walk more interesting at Mulgowan).

Before you do anything else visit here. The exhibit is well worth the time to go through. We spent a good 2 hours in there. The girl on reception of the information centre is very helpful and informative. The new centre is still being developed and will be completed soon. There will be a cafe on site too.

Bourke Historic Cemetery

Reviewed By A8090VKchristiang - Wollongong, Australia

This is a must visit in Bourke for anyone who likes visiting cemeteries or history in general. Before you visit make sure you go to the visitor information centre and get a map for the cemetery. This will help explain what you are looking at and make it a bit more interesting. The cemetery has Bushrangers, Drovers, Cameleers, local heros and also the final resting place for Fred Hollows. There is at least 15 graves highlighted on the map with a 2 lined sentenced explanation for most of the 15 graves. And there are indication markers to find the graves. Try and visit early during the day, as in the afternoon the sun shines in your eyes and photos are harder to take. The cemetery is pretty dry with most of the cemetery dirt and there are no toilets available. You could probably spend around an hour looking around the cemetery.

Paddle Vessel Jandra

Experience the beautiful Darling River aboard the majestic Jandra Paddle Vessel. Enjoy one of the relaxing daily cruises, or book a private charter for your special event. Once on board, the Captain will inform and entertain you with a delightful commentary on river life, flora, fauna and the history of the riverboat era. The original Jandra was a steam paddle boat, built in Mannum, South Australia in 1894 for Arthur Senior of Bourke. Our modern paddle vessel was built by Russell Mansell and his family and commissioned in 2000; the first paddle boat to operate on the Darling River in over 60 years.

Toorale National Park

Drive from North Bourke clearly signposted, managed dirt road driving slowly. Turn off to Darling River campground closed, so proceeded straight to homestead precinct. Picnic area & modern flush toilets available. Sat under a tree for a picnic looking toward the heritage homestead then explored the information signs around the fence. Other station buildings included a forge & bellows in the blacksmith shed, old stables with glimpses of the Warrego River. Further along there were good views of a bend in the Warrego next to NPWS facilities. Very peaceful aspect. We then drove across the Warrego floodplain to the Mount Talowla lookout viewing a few emu groups along the way, including a male with up to 7 striped chicks. The country looks so good after the rain this year.
