What to do and see in Blue Mountains, New South Wales: The Best Historic Sites

November 17, 2021 Nobuko Falco

The Blue Mountains are named for the delicate azure haze that lingers along the region, which is actually a fine cloud of oil emitted by eucalyptus trees. The mystical mountains are a labyrinth of plateaus, gorges and gum trees. Check out the Katoomba Scenic Railway (the steepest railway in the world), the Jenolan Caves and the Giant Staircase nature walk.

The Foundations Portland

The former Portland Cement Works are undergoing a transformation to become a cultural and tourism hub known as The Foundations. Featuring a large scale mural artwork by Guido Van Henlten, monthly markets, pop up galleries and museums.

The paintings on these cement works are amazing. Unfortunately for us, we could not access them so had to take a photo from the road as they were closed for filming. I would have loved to have seen around the back. The paintings are of former cement workers who lived in Portland. So well done.

A great place to go vist. So happy the fires didnt destroy the Blackfellows hand prints. The devastation the fire has caused will return back to the beauty we wanted to see. Still had a great time visiting though.

I really had no idea what we were going to look at. There is a lot of information boards around these ruins to tell you all about the history of this furnace. Was very interesting and is on the outskirts of Lithgow and was not hard to find. Free to access.
