Set on a pass between the northern and southern sections of the Teutoburg Forest, Bielefeld is home to about 325,000 people. Sparrenberg Castle, one of the main attractions, dates from the 13th century, as do the Altstädter Nicolaikirche (St. Nicholas' Church) and the Neustädter Marienkirche (St. Mary's Church). The city also figures prominently in the Bielefeld Conspiracy, a German internet joke that the town does not actually exist, but is rather an elaborate alien or government conspiracy.

The hospital museum is dedicated to the historical hospital system. The collection currently comprises more than 3,500 objects, of which a selection is presented on 146 m2. Films, pictures, audio contributions, texts and books complement various aspects. The museum is designed for people of all ages, for amateurs as well as for experts. For children there is a play corner. Special events will take place for the night views and the International Museum Day. The history section shows how the municipal clinics have developed since the 19th century. Changing topics from medicine and care can be experienced through exhibits, with the "iron lung" at the center. 12 patients in one room: this is what it looked like in the 1950s in the sickroom. Original furniture, treatment and care aids used at that time, e.g. infusions and bandages as well as diagnostic aids are on display. An association founded in 2004 is the sponsor of the museum, which opened in 2010.
