What to do and see in Biei-cho, Hokkaido: The Best Things to do

January 21, 2022 Alice Mieles

Biei-cho is an artist’s canvas of snow-capped mountains and fields swaying with lavender, poppies and bright seasonal blossoms. Art galleries feature the beautiful handiwork of local artists inspired by their surroundings, and the Panorama Road is an aptly-named path to all kinds of sites, particularly local farms and craft workshops. Sup in a charming café to get the true essence of Biei-cho.

Absolutely stunning! This "rainbow field" is definitely our favourite one in the area. The parking fee is waived if you purchase the food at the restaurant on the second floor of the entrance building. Very fair and reasonable. The food was good too. Highly recommended and must visit!

Biei is best known for its Toscana-ish vibe and views. This area offers great ambiance and views, and is PERFECT for a picnic. In summer local farmers might set up fruit stalls that sell fresh fruit for reasonable prices.

The gallery is a nice little two-level house, which exhibits the works of a famous Japanese landscape photographer, Shinzo Maeda (1922–1998). He well captures the changing colours, moods and details of the landscape and of the seasons in Biei, Hokkaido. The only regret is that we were given only 15 minutes in this gallery as we were in a group tour. On sale inside the gallery is a selection of the photographer's works in packs of postcards. In a hurry I bought one, which serves as a very good souvenir.

Shirogane Blue Pond

Although this place is often swarmed with tourists, it is still a must visit if you are already making a trip down to Biei. Just don't get your expectations too high (most photos you see on the internet have been edited anyway), and you'll still find yourself blown away by the view. It is a one-way path around one side of the pond, so there won't be any reverse human traffic happening. There are still plenty of spots for you to take photos without being photo-bombed. Do go all the way to the end though - you get to see the blue pond ending on your right and there's lovely autumn foliage on the hill right in front of you. Toilets are available at the site as well.

Shirahige Falls

Reviewed By Irlandia2012 - Dublin, Ireland

We took the 9.30 am bus from Biei for a very brief stop at the falls, as we didn't have a car. We were very relieved to have about 25 minutes on the snowy bridge for photos and then head immediately back towards the town on the return bus. It was excruciatingly cold in the wind and many places seemed shut, so considering it would have been 3 hours until the next bus we were glad to leave immediately. The falls are nothing short of spectacular. The deep turquoise blues and mineral rich waters made the sight so worth the trip from Biei. Also the overhanging icicles and thickly covered trees were so beautiful. We didn't stop by the pond however, as it is literally covered in thick snow in high winter. The falls on the other hand can give you the nature you need in this part of Japan.
