This fountain is a testament to Samson's strength - he has the lion's mouth apart with his hands. The statue was donated by the Burcher's Guild so it is not surprising that he has a weapon and butcher's tools on his belt!

The Lady Justice has a sword in her right hand and the golden scales of justice in her left, and her eyes are blindfolded. An her feet are a sultan, emperor, king and pope with closed eyes, showing their reverence for justice. When Napoleon's army marched into Bern, soldiers stole the sword and scales!

The bear fountain is a helmeted black bear with a banner and shield with a cup devoting grapes at its feet. Fabulous stone fountain from the 16th century.

This fountain is not the original as it had to be removed due to damaged feet, the tablet being shattered and other deterioration. The current one is from 1791 and the sculptor was Nikolaus Sporrer from Konstanz.

The marksman finally found its mark or permanent home here in the old city by the clock tower/prison tower. It once was outside the marksmen's association and the gun barrel held by the small bear was pointed at the entrance!
