Domaine Marcel DEISS is located in Bergheim, a small village nestling in the heart of the wine region of Alsace, equidistant from the northern and southern boundaries of the region. Current winemaker Jean-Michel DEISS was born into a long-established family of wine growers, living at BERGHEIM since 1744.Managed today by Jean-Michel DEISS, the domaine consists of 26 hectares (52 acres) of hillside vineyards spread over 9 communes and approximately 20 kilometers .The extreme variation in conditions of production at the domaine have led Jean-Michel DEISS to seek to express in each wine the three factors that make a wine complete : the grape variety, the vintage and the terroir. The greater the wine, the more the gustatory characteristics linked to the soil take the place of the typicity linked to grape variety or vintage. When speaking of terroir, the following have to be taken into consideration : geology, pedology, climate and microclimate, technical exploitation of the character of the soil, microfauna and flor, and the traditional methods and techniques used to produce wines. The wine shop is open from 9.00 to 12.00 and 14.00 to 18.00 from monday to friday. Saturday from 10.00 to 12.00 and 14.00 to 18.00 The estate is closed on saturday on Jannuary, Frbruary and march. For a tasting, better to take appointment. In any case no tasting would start after 11.00 on the morning and 17.00 on the afternoon. The tasting cost 15€/pax which will be deduced from purchases over 50€/pax.
I have visited Alsace for a number of years now and always heard great things about this producer. So this year I decided to book an appointment to sample their wines. Quite simply this was the best wine tasting I have ever had and I learnt so much at the same time. The wines themselves are quite exceptional and reflect the local terroir. It is quite amazing how diverse the terroir is around Bergheim and this is captured in the wines. I have been to a number of the top producers in the region and this one definitely sits at the very top. A must visit for anyone with a serious interest in wine.

We had a wonderful visit to Gustav Lorenz to taste their superb wines and I am so glad we arranged some transport there and onto our lunch appointment afterwards. I am not sure how many wines I tried, but it was a lot. The tasting room is very well appointed and the lady who served us was very kind and hospitable. We came away with a bottle of 2010 Pinot Gris Vendage Tardive which happily made it all the way back to Australia. I can see it being opened at Christmas! Highly recommended, but book on-line.
