Ricketts Glen State Park

Reviewed By Harleysville_Bill - PA

We visited Ricketts Glen over the New Years Eve weekend, staying in one of the modern cabins again. We were treated to a real winter wonderland with a good helping of snow. It was really beautiful, quiet and peaceful. All the other cabins were also rented out but, for the most part, it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves.

If you haven't been to Ricketts Glen before, winter might not be the best time of year for your first visit. The trails with the falls are closed, unless you have crampons, ice ax, rope, climbing harness, helmet, etc.and know how to use them. This is something to take very seriously. There is no cell phone coverage in the park and without the proper gear and experience you could kill yourself trying to navigate the falls trails. Driving conditions in winter can also be tricky inside the park. They did a decent job of plowing, but for the most part, all the roads inside the park were hard packed snow.

Coming to Ricketts in the winter was a good call for us, having been there so many times in the spring and summer. It was almost magical in the winter snow.

1,000 Steps at Jacks Mountain

Stairs are uneven heights. There a flat walks between sets of stair. It takes about 45 minutes to climb. The view from the top is of the Juniata River Valley. Miners originally use steps and there were small cars to carry the rock to the bottom.

As you drive 2 miles north of Bloomsburg, PA you will find the small town of Orangeville, PA. 487 Rustics, The Mill House, The Christmas Shop, Winery, & The Lighthouse Laser Engraving; and across the parking lot is a very nice gift shop Forever Green. These shops are well organized, well displayed, and offer a wide variety of gifts, jewelry, decor, etc. I really enjoyed slowing down, walking through these unique shops. Something for everybody. Graffiti Highway

Reviewed By Justin W - York, Pennsylvania

After hearing about cops cracking down on trespassers on Graffiti Highway we quickly decided against it. It's a good thing we did because as we headed into town we were stopped by a state trooper to make sure we didn't have spray paint (we did not as we have respect for those who lost their homes to this tragedy) Less than 20 minutes later the state trooper's car was parked beside Graffiti Highway and I'm assuming he was on the highway giving citations to the trespassers. This road is ILLEGAL people, stay away or you will get a citation. Get a real experience and go down the side streets and look at the overgrown plant life and reflect that dozens of buildings stood where the woods are today. You might even see steps to someone's house or a driveway without a house or the poorly maintained sidewalks. And unlike the highway traveling on those streets by car or foot is 100% legal, confirmed by the trooper himself.

Colonel Ricketts Hard Cider

We are a local family run Cidery that makes Appalachian style Cider. We have been making Cider for over 40 years and have been in the business for 8 years. We currently we have 8 different Ciders, all are created from the varieties of apples we press together. Tastings are FREE. From May to Nov we are located in Green Acres Barn, 4360 Red Rock Rd. Benton, Pa. The Barn has local goods, fun finds, antiques and more. Kids and dogs are welcome too!! We love our little town and one of the perks is being just 10 minutes from beautiful Ricketts Glenn State Park, which boasts 22 waterfalls on its hiking trails. We do numerous events on sight throughout the year and also attend some local wine festivals. Check out our website or FaceBook for the most up to date information.

We stopped here on a drive back home. What a fun experience! The "winery" is very fun to visit. It used to be a farmers market but now they converted the big barn into a little tasting bar area with some seating and rustic décor. They sell some knick knacks and related wine/cider products. The daughter (I believe her name was Megan) was very friendly, very knowledgeable about the different hard ciders and provided us with a quality tasting experience. There was no cost for the tasting. The pricing on the bottles was very reasonable.

The only complaint was that we ordered 3 bottles of cider to go and they packaged up one wrong bottle. The one they packaged up wrong was the one my husband liked the most. Unfortunately, we live 2 hours away so we could not return.

Aside from that small mishap, if you are in the area, the I highly suggest that you pop by and check it out.

Two antique co-ops; café; herb & tea shop; quilting specialty shop.

Reviewed By bilodeau2015 - Pennsylvania

There was an old geezer on the front porch who said, "My wife just went in there. I'll probably be here until Tuesday." I took that as a good sign. Antiques are more for average collectors and maybe not so much for high end collectors. But that's a good thing. That's where most of us are at. Friendly staff. They really know how to have a Christmas open house. We were there when the sandwiches arrived. Can you believe roast beef sandwiches? We didn't have to buy lunch. Met the mayor and the owner of the two shops. Nice people and nice little town. We were in Benton for the first time, but it won't be the last. Traveling on I-80 it's worthwhile for a side trip even though it's of some distance. We really enjoyed our visit.
