In Seattle you simply can’t skip the Central Public Library – a modern architectural marvel of glass grids, unusual shapes, and a “book spiral” that climbs four stories. Stroll over to Pike Place Market to visit the original Starbucks and play catch with a fishmonger. In the heart of the city lies Chihuly Garden and Glass, which will dazzle you with its colorful and delicate works. Glide to the top of the Space Needle for panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and Puget Sound.

Stayed across the street and noticed a sign indicating a Catholic Church! Walked over and realized the Apostles are carved outside. Inside is a full sanctuary complete with altars and candles. If you need a retreat in the middle of crazy downtown Seattle, this is the spot for quiet reflection.

As an architecture buff, I find the Spheres to reflect incredible ingenuity. These three giant globes not only offer a most unusual work space for Amazon employees but they serve as the home for thousands of plants that usually live in cloud forests worldwide. From the exterior, these globes at Amazon headquarters in Downtown Seattle display lots of glass and a steel frame with patterns from nature. Inside, the plant life captured my attention, from a 65-feet-high living wall to delicate orchids. Entry to the Spheres is usually restricted to Amazon employees. We visited on one of the two Saturdays each month when the public can enter for free on a self-guided tour. Reservations are required, which open 30 days in advance and go fast. We presented our on-line tickets and a government-issued ID at the welcome desk for the 1:45 p.m. entry and could have stayed until closing, had we wanted to do that. An elevator and stairs connect the many levels. Tables and chairs hug the perimeter. One space beckons with comfortable sofas. The top level resembles a sun deck with much seating and even some wooden lounge chairs. A living wall here displays what appear to be gourd-like orchids. Some areas offer more dense vegetation than others with meandering paths that allow close-up views. One section offers a short canopy walk on a wooden bridge that sways ever so slightly. Employees stood ready throughout the complex to answer questions and provide much information. Directional signs appear in big circles on the floor. General Porpoise, a coffee bar in the shape of a sphere, sells a variety of coffee and tea drinks and a few other items, such as sodas and doughnuts. During our stop here, the doughnuts had sold out. We could only imagine how employees must feel when working in this light-and-plant-filled interior. Though only visitors, we felt energized by the environment and chose to stay for two hours, which was far longer than we had expected to linger. Those without one of the Saturday reservations can enter the big room known as the "Understory" at the bottom of the Spheres at no cost. Exhibits provide details about the building, plants and more. An open grassy area and a ramp next to the Spheres provides an opportunity to take a close look at the exterior. Public transport is a good way to arrive, but there are parking garages nearby.
Now you don't have to sacrifice personal hygiene to have an active social life: you can do your laundry while sipping your drink at this laundromat-bar.
