From canal-laced, fairy-tale cities like Bruges and Ghent to the urban centers of Antwerp and Brussels, Belgium sits at the crossroads of medieval and modern Europe. The chance to sample famous exports such as chocolate and beer straight from the source only sweetens a visit.

Wander through the Les Galeries Saint Hubert, a gorgeous glass roofed arcade in the center of Brussels. Lined with cafes, theaters and luxury stores, the Les Galeries Saint Hubert also has the distinction of being the first covered shopping arcade in Europe.
Always a delight to stroll through this arcade and look at the wonderful things on display in the generally high-end shops. One or two closed units though - a sign of the times in retail - but the various cafes are worth a visit for an unhurried spot of people-watching. A visit to the arcade cinema should be on the itinerary at some point.

I have a son, daughter-in-law and grandson in Stokkel, so I'm already predisposed toward the place. I have to say, however, that after Leuven, where I've lived and worked, Stokkel is my favorite place in Belgium to spend an extended period of time. It is not for someone who is in Brussels for just a day or two. It is, rather, the sort of place where you live and where, unlike touristy areas, you see how others who are there more or less permanently live. Lots of expats, of course, but the expat community does not define it nor set the tone of the place. Place Dumon is lovely and despite what I read in one of the reviews, is a genuine Belgian market (I have been to dozens of them). The walking/cycling trail that you can get onto about 400 metres from Place Dumon is marvelous.
