Just four miles from the center of Lisbon, Belem (or Santa Maria de Belem) is best known for Belem Tower (or Torre), a 16th-century fortified lighthouse built to guard the port. This was, after all, the port from which famous Portuguese navigators like Vasco de Gama set off to explore the world. The area is also home to Belem Palace, built in the 16th century by King Manuel and now the official residence of Portugal’s president. Belem is also home to the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery.

Lisbon gradually expanded along the Tagus River and from there towards the sea. Following the river, you will first discover LX Factory, an industrial complex turned into a hub of restaurants, vintage shops and creative industries. After that, leaving the 25th of April bridge behind, you will dive into contemporary Lisbon: the newly-opened Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT). This experience can be completed later with a visit to the Belém Cultural Centre (CCB). Right after, be ready to get surprised by Belém and its beauty: Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, the Monument of the Discoveries and an incredible garden planted by the sea - they are all waiting to be discovered. At the end of the trip, treat yourself with a delicious custard tart at Lisbon’s most famous factory, Pastéis de Belém.

This is a late review, but necessary. We thoroughly enjoyed our private day tour with Sintra Magik in Fatima. The Shrine of course was incredible. The visit to the family home and meeting their descendants were equally touching. We sampled the local cuisine and appreciated the hospitality. Our tour of the religious factory allowed us to return with artifacts for our family. We were so fortunate to have a delightful Irish priest bless these keepsakes. An awesome, memorable day. We highly, highly recommend this tour group.

I went on the Sintra tour with Diogo on a beautiful day in January and had such a great experience. Diogo has endless knowledge on all that we saw with the added benefit of living and breathing Lisbon for his whole life. We connected immediately, warm and friendly. He seamlessly injected stories and facts of everything we saw, with personal anecdotes and humor. I learned so much history about this beautiful city and also the country itself and how it’s changed over the years with kings & queens, dictators and developers. By the end of the day I also had a few gems of knowledge on where to go and what to do for gay nightlife too????! What a FaBulOus day!!! Thank you Diogo????

Discover one of the most majestic and popular areas of the Lisbon waterfront during this 3-hour private walking tour. This is the place where the famous world explorers set off on voyages of discovery in the 15th century, but also where Portugal hosted the World Exhibition in 1940. Full of history and charm, Belém is the perfect neighborhood to stroll around on foot. Visit the Square of the Empire, the famous Monument of the Discoveries, and the the exotic "Portuguese House for the Colonies.” In the end you will certainly gain a completely different image of Lisbon.

There are probably cheaper tours available but they will lack the depth of knowledge and passionate connection to Lisbon’s illustrious history. Our guide was not only a great source of information but genuinely wanted to cover topics that we found interesting. We saw several large group tours that were very formulaic and less personalized, which made us appreciate our decision. Highly recommended!!

Passing through the downtown area of Lisbon, you will learn about the earthquake of 1755 and how that changed the city forever. See Rossio, the heart of the city center and head to the top of one of the city’s hills: Graça. Here you can enjoy the breathtaking views overlooking the city and the river. You will then explore the most authentic neighborhood of Lisbon: Alfama. You will fall in love with its narrow maze-like streets and feel like you are suddenly in a small village. It is time to visit another neighborhood: Belém. Here you will have the chance to see the impressive Jerónimos Monastery, the resting place of kings, queens and the famous navigator Vasco da Gama and poet Camões. After the Monastery it is time to go to the Belém Tower, a fortress built by order of King Manuel I in order to protect the banks of Lisbon in the 16th century. Before returning to the hotel, enjoy a delicious Belém pastry.
