A very well reserved castle in a spectacular setting. The information was well presented and is well worth a visit. Beware, the keep closes for lunch 12.30-2.00.

We spent a couple of hours visiting the castle and really enjoyed our visit. It’s free to enter, great ramparts and towers to climb and walk round and superb views over the town and countryside. I’d advise flat shoes/ trainers as there are lots of steps and uneven surfaces. There are also low walls and drops but fantastic views and perfectly safe. There is a museum with a film about the castle and some Roman remains. The curator speaks good English but displays and film are in Portuguese. Would really recommend it as a visit.

When you get up to the castle property, make sure to go to the tourist office. The people there can get someone to go with you up into the castle tower to see the arms museum. It is located in the base of the tower. The tower ceiling is unique. I have never seen one like it. Then, you can climb the circular staircase to the top of the tower to stand on top of the roof. The views are truly awesome. It is a long way up, but worth it.
